I understand the ridge is pretty narrow, but also looks pretty grassy. Is there room for a tent at a squeeze? Needs to be at least as large and flat and grassy as the top of Bidein a'Choire Sheasgaich, my limit of camping comfort so far Thanks

There is a flattish grassy area just to the north of the summit (with a very low attempt at a stone shelter) but you might be better off in the col between the summit and the north (655m) top.

Further info now I’ve been there for anyone searching:

there are acres of grass, (maybe slightly sloping) on the south ridge maybe  15 minutes below top, but if you want to be as near the top as possible for night photography, there is a coffin size grassy hollow in the narrow north ridge, 20m from the cairn. Perfect for one person. A tent overlaps edges a bit. I didn’t go as far as the site with wall mentioned

In reply to markryle:

That’s a spectacular site - I remember the ridge as being so surprisingly narrow that I’m surprised there’s even that hollow. Must have had a big wow factor as an overnight bivvy.

Hi Gordon you’re right, a freak grassy hollow, not somewhere to trip on a guy line🤣 definitely one of my best campsites

With a strong full moon and a night time inversion on one of your trips did you manage to generate any  Brocken spectra’s?

Ive always wonder if it’s possible, is the moon light strong enough. The times I’ve been above inversions at night either the moon phase and/or position has been wrong, or the cloud top too low.

In theory since moon rainbows are possible, and I have seen, albeit in monochrome as our eyes rods and cone cells aren’t sensitive to pick out the colours, it should be possible to generate a Brocken.

But would our eyes see it?

There is an example here https://astro4edu.org/resources/media/fl18Jg68qV87/ but I'm not sure how easily visible it would be to the naked eye, as opposed to a long exposure photo.

You’ve reminded me , I have seen the vestiges of a lunar fog bow, and in day time fog bows are normally less intense than brockens. So lunar Brockens should be visible to the naked eye in the right conditions.

I haven't seen one, sounds incredibly tricky!

That is, I think, a lunar fog bow, not rainbow. I have a very poor photo of one (looks the same as with naked eye), but I've not seen a lunar brocken. Have seen lunar rainbows.

Indeed it is, though rainbows and fogbows are the ends of a continuum (depending on the droplet size) of the same phenomenon. Maybe something got lost in translation from the Japanese.

I've seen a few moonbows and once a very brief glimpse of a glory but no accompanying brocken spectre on a moonlit bivvy.

I’ve just done a quick Google (Google’s amazing, isn’t it?) and immediately came up with this:

This.

Obviously bring a strong tent if coming any time soon and there'll probably be snow up there within the next day or two, so another thing to contend with.

Edit: Ugh, ignore my post, I blame markryle for the necromancy!

A lot if those are blatantly and comically and AI generated/photoshopped (like so many "photographs" these days🙁).

I think Google is being degraded by "AI".
