Are there any bothies in the North/West / Manchester area?

Tried looking it up but can't seem to find any. Want to plan my next trip around one. This is my first post so hopefully I wrote this on the correct forum. Thanks!

In reply to username7654321: depends what you mean  north west but yes, sort of. google does show them up. I m loath to go any further for a new poster  with no profile and a crap user name. cant think of what nefarious reason  a bot would want to know this but from under my tin foil hat there will be one . if you are real fill in a profile and thin of a better user name. if not ....E 0 .

Best option is to get a 24 hour ticket on the Manchester circular night bus

You're just jealous because his/her  username has a bigger number than yours.

In reply to mike123:

Why are you being so antagonistic? Everybody has to make their "first" post at some point. Not that I should have to give my personal info to you or explain myself, but I'm very new to hiking, only just got some gear for christmas and thought I'd ask a forum for help getting started. In the future, just don't reply if you're going to be nasty. Thanks for such a wonderful welcome, Mike.

I'm not AI, I was just asking for help. No idea why everyone is being so hostile towards a simple question.

I checked this site when looking, sadly none near me. Thanks for the reply though.

Sometimes I think the phrase 'giving someone the benefit of the doubt' could lead to a healthier and more welcoming culture here. I've been on here over ten years and am familiar with all the bot and troll problems, but why should anyone expect a new user to do a PhD in UKC history before posting a straightforward question, especially bearing in mind most of these issues are in the politics forum which is hidden by default?

Welcome, username7654321, I'm afraid I can't help with your question.

When I was starting out in the hills we used youth hostels but they've either disappeared or gone more upmarket. We also used to doss in shooting huts or decrepit barns. It was all part of the adventure stumbling across these places and avoiding detection and keeping their locations under wraps (publicity is the way a lot of things get trashed). This was over half a century ago and so may be regarded as ancient history to some but the basic solution was to just get out and look with open eyes and exploit what was available on meagre resources. All done with paper maps and no internet or forum, on bicycle, bus and train. Welcome to the great outdoors and possibly the most life changing thing you'll do. Have an adventure.

Not a bothy but there is a shooting cabin in Lower Small Clough above Howden Reservoir. It's marked on the O/S 1/25000 map. Not been there in a long while so it may not be in good shape. It did have 4 walls and a roof plus some benches and tables. Often used by low life for wild parties who left all their crap behind.

I do think that the OP user name could be a little more helpful.

My AI comment was a follow on from the previous negative, as a joke, as the name is a little simplistic.

Hmmm, not sure you’re going to get much sympathy with the above  response.

Welcome to UKC... human

Its not for me to apologise for anyone else - but perhaps your first post could have been more charitably received, and I hope you'll stick around. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here.

On the other hand, there have been problems with bots and spammers and banned users signing-up here. In that context your choice of username perhaps looked a bit suspicious. If you wanted to change it then some here use their real name, others use nom de guerres of varying levels of sarcasm.

Also - ukc forums can be a little... robust... sometimes. Mostly you get used to it. In my experience this is almost invariably a friendly and helpful place though.

As for bothies: North Wales, Forest of Bowland, North Pennines, Lake District are your best bets if you're Manchester-based. Or  the Scottish Borders if you dont mind travelling further. See the map that someone posted above. I personally wouldn't use a bothy near to a major city, if such a thing existed - it would be too likely to be either a party venue or attract difficult people. Good luck.

To be fair, the newcomer's username is no less "helpful" than all the other pseudonyms on UKC, unless you are fazed by its numerical content.

In reply to username7654321: my apologies . Lots of weird things happen on here . Posters often pop up , ask a perfectly reasonable question and then very quickly start to spew all kinds of strange nonsense . Vaccines . Tom ten names apologists . These posts often pop up late at night . I usually look at UKC first thing in a morning and either report them or post a snarky reply based on long running UKC threads that have become standing jokes . These include : what have they /them / their done in grit and “E 0 “ which is  a climbing grade that doesn’t exist ( or maybe it does ?)

As somebody said above I should have give you the benefit of the doubt .   I normally do . So : sorry .

There are several bothys / shelters in the lakes. They are by and large quite small . It’s wise to carry a tent as back up for the possibility that they are full when you arrive .

I very much agree with this and also like you use of “difficult people “ . I struggle to find a polite a term for Difficult people that is not offensive .  For many years I had an annuaL bothy trip with a friend who was passionate about exploring the lesser known corners of Scotland . So walks with no munros or lesser used routes up them . He was a master at dealing with difficult people disarming  and engaging them . They were often interesting and good company once their difficult had been dealt with .

It is a name which is just a bit facile, and could be readily generated by a simple program.

I wouldn't put much faith in a bot which employed a username like

Username 7654321

((or, for that matter

Mike 123)

No offence intended, and all that....

The "bothies" of the Peak District were old shooting cabins, but most were razed to the ground in the 60s/70s. A few remain but their small number, their proximity to major conurbations and the popularisation of bothies and their locations on social media means you'd be lucky to find one empty.

Even "wild camping" is now an activity with multiple social media accounts honey-potting locations.....

That's one way to say "full of unwelcoming arseholes that cry bot at every opportunity". I agree it gets better, but welcoming new users is not a strength of this forum IMO.
