I've been looking for some layers for our little girl (she's just gone 1) for when we're out for days on the hill or when she's in the bike trailer. So far I've found nothing worth buying and was hoping some of you could recommend some brands or products that have worked for you?

We've got her a fleece lined cost that's windproof and will be getting her an insulated snowsuit. Looking for tights, thermals etc please!

Many thanks!

Snowsuits will be fine - full zips are easy to get them on and off, and long sleeves means she can have her hands up inside.  Anything underneath will work (you don't need close-fitting speciality baselayers/thermals in my opinion), as long as the snowsuit isn't tight - you need plenty of room for the air inside to warm.

When she's a bit older (maybe from about three), the kid's waterproof gear from Lidl is pretty good.  It's tough, fully waterproof and fleece lined.

If your child is anything like mine were, anything that will stay on is good.  My lot were very good at kicking off footwear and gloves.

I had a variety of fleecy snowsuit type things with integral feet and mitts.  Columbia did good ones and I also had a wind stopper one but can’t recall who made it.  It was excellent as it had a hood which actually stayed up.

we got one of the below from Cotswold - it was reduced as had a mark and it’s one of the best bits of kids clothes we ever bought - ours practically lived in it when on walk (in and out of carrier) and on back of our bikes. As a result we didn’t really bother with technical underlayers - just put them in this.

when a bit older we got a sprayway body suit and fleece body suit - again didn’t bother with tech wear below this; foldable hand and foot bits were really useful as opposed to wrestling them in and out of gloves etc

I would avoid down overall (unless you never, ever have nappy accidents).

I think the best one we had which did both our kids was a Spotty Otter suit, half price in a sale. https://spottyotter.co.uk/patrol-fleece-lined-waterproof-splashsuit/

I still recall being faintly envious of just how lovely and snuggly it was teamed up with some excellent Swedish mittens that had a magic ability to locate thumbs down the thumb-holes, one of the most unbelievably difficult things to do for a small child!

Spotty Otter often on sale Sport Pursuit.

Cheers

In reply to ben b: I was just about to say spotty otter one piece snow suits . I only got around to selling the ones my lot used . Head and shoulders above anything else . I thought they had gone out of business ? If they ve started up again that’s great . I put several bits on eBay that despite having had lots of use were in great condition . I put them on what I thought were fairly high but it now prices intending to take lower offers but  all of them were snapped up. I think they are the Isla bike of childrens clothes , expensive  to buy but last for ages and hold their value . My youngest is now 10 and will use the last SO jacket this winter . It’s been well  used my my older two and after a wash looks in  great Nic . One last thing , ( and you probably  know this but always worth saying ) young children get cold very quickly in back packs and bike trailers , no matter how expensive the kit . When it’s cold out , check them constantly . I’m sure google will throw up a few tragedies .

Not really thermals, but these guys do some nice warm hats and gloves.

We found MECs one piece suits (fleece and waterproofs) to be the most effective - relatively easy to get on/ and off, great at keeping the weather out and the warmth in. We were fortunate to be able to buy in person while in Canada so can't vouch for shipping to the UK - but can't see that being a problem

We didn't really get anything special (edit: beyond the basics, ie a couple of waterproof oversuits, hats, mittens etc), we just layered him up a lot. To be honest, by the time he was a bit gone one we figured that he wasn't really having much fun just being toted around the place so we needed to plan activities more around having him running around rather than sitting in a backpack / bike seat for extended periods of time (although we did still use the bike to get him around the place...)

One thing I would recommend if she's not walking yet are waterproof foot-bags, like these:

They're cheap, durable, warm, as waterproof as anything that you can get a foot inside and they stay on fairly well. Really good for playground sessions in dubious weather.
