I'm heading up to Pitlochry for work on Tuesday/Wednesday but have a day or so to spare beforehand so I'm going to stop off somewhere en route - and I have barely entered the Dumfries and Galloway region until now.

Any recommendations for somewhere to visit and pootle around for the day? Short/medium length walks and some nature-poking would be of interest. It looks like the options are mostly either something on the coast or something in the forests inland?

Excellent hill walking. You probably won't see anyone except on the Merrick.

Cairnsmore of Carsphairn is a short day out in a nice area.

A longer day would be The Merrick taking in Lochs Enoch and Arrow (sp?).
