I'm basically completely new to downloading music from the net, I'm not entirely sure how to go about it but I'm sure it's not rocket science.

However what I need to begin with is to know where to go for the music. Can anybody recommend good sites where I can download tracks and/or whole albums, preferably free or for nominal cost.

Jude's fifteen year old daughter used a site called Kazaa over the summer which seemed to result in our PC becoming infected with viruses and spyware, so I prefer to stay clear of that one.

Win MX... but it's illegal!

Kaazaa sin't a site, it's an application that allows you to share files peer to peer. If you use Kaazaa Lite it's spyware free. Can also recommend Limewire, get the Pro version if possible.
And it is all illegal you know.

In reply to BrianT:

"Emule" or "LimeWire", (Google for them) both free and no adware or spyware. Singles, albums and Video. Keep running your anti-virus (AVG) and get "Spybot" just to double check things.

I think that should be Kazaa plus which is trouble free.

In reply to denis b: Isn't kazaa plus a payed for piece of software that just lacks the adverts of Kazaa. Kazaa lite was effectively a pirate piece of software that had all the spyware and advert stuff removed, and as such was much better behaved and reliable.

Unfortunately the people who owned Kazaa managed to very quickly get the main site for Kazaa lite closed down for copyright infringement (don't the RIAA wich they could have so much success).

So unfortunately it is now difficult to get Kazaa lite as there is no official portal for it, and you can only get it from people who have the installation files.

Speaking of which, does anybody have a copy of those files?

Only slightly related to the OP, but I see that "The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has referred Apple's iTunes service to the European Commission on grounds that it overcharges UK customers."

Which? formerly the Consumer's Association has complained that UK customers are barred from logging in to French and German iTunes sites, where downloads cost less (79p as opposed to the 68p that you get charged for the same song download in France and Germany)

See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4065539.stm for another case of the music industry ripping off Britain...

And they - the Music Industry, that is - wonder why people use illegal downloads...

In reply to Liam M: I dont know the full history of Kazaa Lite versus plus to be honest. K Plus is cheap however but not quite up to Napster at its best. Additionally there are no popups etc but the search facility is a little slow and you only get access when you have built up a significant file share folder.

In reply to Liam M:

Sounds about right. I've got the files for KaZaA Lite, drop me an email and I could send them to you if you like?

In reply to BrianT:

I'll second bittorrent. Its a program, like Kazaa, but better. Not so many viruses and fake files on it.

Use the azureus client though, much better. Here's the source:

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

Then you need to download 'torrent' files for it, which connect you to everyone else. Best source is suprnova:

http://www.suprnova.org/

Site's playing up today though. Here's anyone one:

http://www.filesoup.com/index.php

And if you like your footie:

h**p://footballtorrents.com:6969/index.html

Take the stars out of that address, the site won't let me post with them in.

An alternative to bittorrent is soulseek. Search google for it, I don't use it much but people tell me it's good.

That's unbelieveable, they must be making a killing at 68p as it is. Imagine the money they save in not having to package and distribute cd's any more, plus the fact you're lots more likely to download on a whim, which is going to increase sales. People i know who've discussed illegal downloading have said it encourages people to buy official cd's after they get a taste for a previously unheard artist. They're just bitching cause they can't screw us out of more money, vive la revolucion!

Personally, I'm not surprised.

For all of those talking about BitTorrent, read this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4096013.stm and follow the link at top right for a realplay movie about how the film industry is taking BitTorrent to the courts for being the "facilitator" for illegal movie downloading.

I did that, cheers. I'll try burning some cd's soon as I get some blank disks. Nice to see supernova have some decent jazz on there.
