Mines an Elsie Mo. You can only get it one place locally.

Timmy Taylor's Golden Best, or, seeing as its hard to find, Landlord
 abr1966 25 Mar 2008
In reply to John Wood: A good pint of Landlord...i'm lucky as my local has it and it's so good!
 PK 25 Mar 2008
In reply to pingod: They have Landlord at my local occasionally, but I'm becoming quite partial to a pint of Hawkshead Bitter.
Bingers 25 Mar 2008
In reply to John Wood:

I prefer the Dark Mild. Lovely nutty taste and you can have several without feeling shit in the morning. With all that in mind, I'd like to recommend the Brown Cow in Bingley.
In reply to pingod:

I quite like Adnams in preference to Landlord (which has to be kept very well). To be really unpolitically correct I'd say that Pedigree is typically a safe bet for an 'ordinary (real ale) pint'.
In reply to pingod:

Draught -- Mordue Brewery's 'Workie Ticket'
Bottled -- Jennings 'Sneck Lifter'

Linfit Special at the Sair, quality!
 CJD 25 Mar 2008
In reply to tanssop:

the Sair is terrifying! okay, it's got character but you never quite know who/what is going to walk through the door next...

There's a pub round here that does the full Timothy Taylors range and their Golden Best is very good indeed.

So many views, so much non committal!! (spelling?)
Do they all drink alco pops?

Timmy T's is nice, but like black sheep more.
Spitfire for the more sunny, sunday afternoons that you know are turning into an evening.

Had a nice pint from the Houston Brewery (Scotish i believe) in the week.

Strangly struggled in the lakes for a proper good pint at the w'end.
The climing conditions were good though, more than makes up!

Cheers

Theakstons' Old Peculier. Sadly very very rarely available in Londonshire...

Billy the fish 25 Mar 2008
In reply to Masood: You've beaten to it voting for OP; their XB was also very good but I've not seen that for some time now. Anyway, if you're a Londoner, shouldn't you be drinking warm flat stuff from funny pint mugs with handles on?
 sutty 26 Mar 2008
In reply to Billy the fish:

Turn left to pub a mile NE and it has XB or Theakstons best.
Turn right and right again and have either Tetleys and Sam Smiths
Turn right 100yards and John Smiths
Turn right and a mile and have either Tetleys or the guest beer, usually Black Sheep, Theakstons, Adnams, Pedigree or a couple of others.

plenty of choice here.

P.G. Steam, from the R.C.H. Brewery, just down the road from me. It's drawn straight from the barrels behind the bar at my (fantastic) local. A (couple of) pint(s) of that, sinking into an chair by the open fire with my labrador asleep next to me is just bliss!
 sutty 26 Mar 2008
In reply to James Jackson:

If you like mild, this has been the best I have had in years. When there the bitter is abandoned;

Wouldn't disagree about the landlord needing to be kept well. This is why i moved to Yorkshire

Light session beers:
Theakstons, Best - can be a bit variable outside the imediate vicinity of Masham but always worth a go.
Dent, Best - can be a bit impossible to find

Stronger heavier ale/stout:
York brewery, Centurion ghost ale - Gorgeous and chocolatey but it messes with your head.
Bushys, Oyster stout - The perfect pint but brewed in tiny batches.

There's hundreds of other great pints out there, those are just the few that imidiately spring to mind.

If you're in the midlands, there's always the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley, great for a pint of Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild although that's not a beer to take lightly.

Re OP

I'm a big fan of Ye Olde Trip as a good all round beer.

In reply to Kevster: lots of views and few people deciding, becasue its a difficult question! Our local does usually about 4 real ales at a time. I dont know what my favorite is, although i do like a black sheep. You can get riggwelter on tap, but i dont think they've had it at our local.

Ah Kimbo. Never got a taste for the stuff. Same with Home and Shippo's -
Nottingham never was blessed with decent breweries.
I remember a CAMRA press release saying how upset they were about the lack of local response to their "Save Home Brewery" campaign. The fact that the locals were in the streets shouting "Shut the place, their beer's piss" passed them by.
Agree about the Vat + Fiddle / Elsie Mo. Might have to stop for one on the way home tonight!

I was bitten by a traveller in there once. He thought I looked sleepy and needed waking up. So he grabbed my arm and sank his teeth in. He Was very friendly about it

Just about the biggest pile of grim shite you can buy. hate the stuff. each to their own though!

I can think of many much better ales; double drop, black sheep, deuchars ipa, Innis and gun, old peculiar, bishop's finer (bottle only), ESB, Abbot ale, Tangle foot, 6X etc etc etc...

Pride is usually minging but I've had some passable pints of the stuff in London, unsuprisingly. Most of the beers you've listed taste like soap in a lot of southern pubs and if you're in that London a pint of summat from fuller's is often your safest option.

I do reckon you need proper northern water to make a top beer though.
 nastyned 27 Mar 2008
In reply to Wilbur: London pride and ESB come from the same mash so if you've found one tastes nice and the other is minging it's most likely due to how the beer has been kept.
ceri 27 Mar 2008
In reply to Wilbur: I like most of those! drink them at home in bottles, can never remember what we drink in the pub, wonder why...

Aye, Landlord. Its got ot be a good pint mind. I had a pint at t'Millstone outside Hathersage 2 month back. Bloody gorgeous.

(Sorry for the vernacular; talking about real ale makes me go all northern.)
