Pretty much what the title says... I thought I was so organised, throwing my washing in the machine before work this morning (despite a 5.10am start)... just got home and pulled out the clothes... and there it was.

So do I try and start it up now or when it's dry?
Put it through the dryer to warm it up?
Will it recover... if it doesn't, any chance I can get it fixed under warranty?

I know it's not a big deal but I saved for it for ages!!

Def do not try to switch it on now!! And I would not put it through the drier either. The only thing to do with electronics that get wet is leave them somewhere dry for as long as you can hold out then try switching them on. At least a couple of days is probably advisable. You could try opening up the case to dry it out if you are happy doing such things.

Got a hair dryer?
 owlart 27 Dec 2007
In reply to broccoligirl: Open it up and take the batteries out, then leave it somewhere to dry out for at least a week. It /might/ then restart happily. I did know someone who put their USB Pen Drive through the washing machine and that survived intact, so there is hope.

In reply to broccoligirl:

Wit a bit of luck it'll be totally solid state, no moving parts, and if you leave it to dry - and I'd say for at least 48 hours - then it will just work.

If it has an removable battery pack, I'd remove that, and also leave the battery compartment open, to facilitate drying.

 BigBrother 27 Dec 2007
In reply to broccoligirl: As above, don't switch on untill completely dried out. Although as it would have had the battery in you may be out of luck.

How did you buy it? Some credit cards have accident cover for 90 days on all purchases.

Thanks guys... there is no battery (charge by plugging into my lappie). Is it a ridiculous qn to ask if the music will survive too?

[looks mildly shamefaced at not knowing this]

Erm- with my debit card- does that count??

Er... it does have a battery but not a battery compartment for disposable batteries

If the player survives then the music should do too.

Was it switched off in your pocket? Better chance if it was.

 owlart 27 Dec 2007
In reply to broccoligirl: There's no such thing as a ridiculous question, only a question you don't know the answer to! If the player survives, then it's likely that the music will survive too.

I accidentally put one of my mobiles through the wash, the best thing to do is to remove as much of the casing as you can then leave it under the fire on the hearth, assuming you have a gas or electric fire that is <chuckle> with the screen facing down, and leave to dry for perhaps a couple of weeks.

to try and dry it too quick will cause any moisture to condense inside and possibly on the screen which is exactly what you don't want.

Hope all goes well for you

I work with a geezer who lost a USB stick. It was in the door seal of his washing machine for 3 months!
It works fine!!!
The label is a bit bleached though.

Solid state electronics are amazing. I don't fancy broccoligirl tool's chances with a shorted out battery though....

Hmmm. Well, the player is thinking about it's options in the airing cupboard. I am hoping that I'm one of the lucky ones.

Thanks all!!

The airing cupboard will probably be fine, but slow - which is probably best.

Are there any screws holding it together? Opening it as much as possible, and letting out as much moisture as you can is best.

In reply to broccoligirl:
It's probably best to first chuck it in clean ( or preferrably distilled )water a few times to get rid of any contamination before drying..."stuff" can cause shorts and ruin a board but if it's aready been wet then what more damage can a dunk in distilled do?
OP broccoligirl 27 Dec 2007
In reply to ampfryer:

Surely it was rinsed out with the rest of my clothes? Im loathe to gt it wet again...
 grumsta 27 Dec 2007
In reply to broccoligirl:

Yeah I wouldn't get it wet again personally.

I trust you found some alternative root vegetable? Where was I? Having a bubble bath and reading about a couple doing the Seven Summits. AWESOME. Things are ok, not fab (Dad's unwell) but ok.... are we going to grab Miss Monkey and some others and go climbing at some stage?

In reply to broccoligirl: last week my radio went in the bath with me while it was switched on, its working fine after being left to dry for a couple of days, my computer is still US after having milk poured in it and my Creative Zen mp3 has never worked since it went for a dive - so take your pick of those and keep your fingers crossed

In reply to broccoligirl:

Most definitely. I have a plan (new years' resolution) to get back into climbing, and will definitely be heading away as often as possible, at least once a month I hope. Will keep you informed as to when & where, and happy to give people a lift if needed.

Charger? Cheers cherub, but I might not jump the gun JUST yet...

I am resisting the iMonopoly but if this player goes t1tsoup then I might look at it- is 8gig enough though? My current one is 8 and now I'm questioning if its enough...
