Well to me, a 'Chav' is dressing in Adidas all in one, well any all in one, socks over trouser, gloves. And just generally dosing about not really doing much.

But yet on another thread, somebody said they wouldn't want 'Chavs' climbing? what because of how they dress?

Or is there more to the mere 'Chav', I personally hate the word, as basically its a way of say commoner, but people feel alright in using it.

Chav seems to be pretty much a word for poor person. Poor people sometimes have rather different language and imperatives than those of us who have some economic stability. My recommendation is that you try and see where they're coming from, rather than just call them chavs and hate them. FWIW, most of my family in Liverpool are chavs, probably.
mac_climb 04 Apr 2007
In reply to Steve Parker: You replied to me, yes? If so then i don't hate poor people, apart from the scum, scum which you get in all classes of people. Using the class structure is rather basic as it does not exist now really.

In reply to mac_climb:

Some people will try and tell you it's a state of mind or an attitude, but the reality is that that state of mind doesn't really exist outside of those deprived niches where people just don't get the education to see things differently. Chav is a hate word used by idiots to describe their enemies when some attempt to understand them would be rather more useful.

In reply to mac_climb:

I'd have said 'Chav' is people who value things with certain brand names e.g. Adidas, Rockport and the ubiquitous Burberry patterns, as well as certain styles of car (boy racer etc).

Being rich or poor doesn't make you a Chav. Tramps aren't Chavs, they can't afford to be.

Not really. Chavs are mostly just a bit gormless and thick, and generally lack the bristling sense of latent violence displayed by the thoroughbred Ned.

yep - this generation's put down for 'working class'- which is why juli Burchall calls her self ' the queen of chavs'
In reply to Gybebunny: Your right chavs are not necessarily poor as they are usualy covered in 'bling' (tasteless, chunky, jewellery usualy gold).

In reply to Etak: I know plenty of people who are very much working class, but certainly would not describe as Chav, even if I used the word. As for Julie Burchill irrelevant load mouth is the appropriate term.

In reply to Etak:

It's not about working class. It's more about non-working class. Families who ask about their newborn child "If I claim child benefit for him now that won't affect him being able to get the dole when he's older will it?"

People who believe they have the right to get 'society' to provide their every need but don't want to ever work for it or take responsibility for their actions. People who shout at their kids in supermarkets and blame schools for not bringing them up properly. People who steal from others because they believe that 'insurance companies are the only losers'. People who live in their own plastic bubble of ignorance oblivious to the negative effect they have on themselves, their families and the world at large. People who drop litter and have no care for the consequence because they don't see the decay of the shared environment as a problem.

That's more the definition of scum I suppose it's a breed that has spawned the 'chav' and shares a lot of attitudes.

Not that I'm at all judgemental.

In reply to mac_climb:

I think Mr Quadmyre said it all really.

I see a chav as being:

1. Uneducated
2. Foul mouthed
3. Obnoxious.
4. No concept that anyone is important outside their own little bubble.
5. No respect for the environment, animals, other people.
6. Only happy when creating noise, litter, hassle to others.
7. Usually wear the stereotypical burberry or other baseball cap, shell-suit (or Ingurland football shirt), bling, nasty cheap trainers.
8. Death-trap Vauxhall Nova/Corsa with big bore exhaust, permanently on fog lights and distorted stereo.

Think thats it covered.

The real problem is that they are breeding rapidly.

Ah, thanks, forgot that one!

9. No concept of contraception and intent on breeding even more obnoxious and antisocial offspring.

Quite right, synonymes include, pleb, oik, yob, working class or mearly poor people. As always the only way for a man to escape the class is education leading to a good job, for a woman marry money. The word has been coined by the neo-fascist right wing press as a way of insulting their readership without them noticing. As always this takes the form of saying that if you have accepted the current economic situation as unalterable and don't object to the uber rich taking an ever bigger slice of the economic cake and paying ever less in tax then you can escape the censure mearly by tugging your forelock as your betters at the correct moments. Such people have always formed the bulk readership of the daily mail. Strangly in behavior and manners these people most closely match the top tier of the upper class; those being the only other group who don't give a stuff what the narrow minded sycophants of the upper middle classes think about them...

In reply to davidwright:

Crap. It's a cultural identity.
People are born poor but they choose to be chavs.
Culture is fair game.
In reply to Etak:

Chav/ned is a very different thing to working class. You can get chavs/ neds from middle class backgrounds. It is an insult to working class people to be considered as chavs.

I as yet cannot speak from personal experience but know those who can and fairly consistently their opinion of chavs is less than flattering.

My first impression is they're sad fashion victims. There's an army of young white yanks that suffer this same affliction: attempting to be black/hip-hop not because of any personal taste or even conscious volition, but rather because it's popular.

The PUNK movement saw this same sort of nonsense; overun by gits who didn't understand what was going on but wanted to be a part something, of anything, of "the crowd".
In reply to Regis Von Goatlips:

It's not a fashion thing as such. It's just moronic scumbags. Certainly a lot of them wear trackies and stuff but that is just incidental to the lifestyle.

In reply to davidwright: the chavscum website was started by a working class person, it is, don't forget, working class people who suffer the attentions of our chav friends the most, I haven't seen many rich people having chips bounced off their heads on my local bus on a saturday night. the term may well have been appropriated by posh nobs to describe the urban poor but that misses the point. A chav is someone without any regard for anyone outside of their mates.

This is the opinion of British mates mentioned in my post too. Nearly verbatim nearly every time.
