I've not been there since 1977 so I'm all out ideas now. There's a pond near Standish hall I used to fish in, but there wasn't any trees back then (also much steeper sided) - I think we used to call it the hermitage

The hermitage: walk past it most days. In fact, this phone photo from today - zoom in - you can make out the hermitage pond. Standish Hall farm is behind me and to my left, bear a path junction which takes you to Elnup woods.  Standish Hall farm was sold this (last) year for 10.5 million !!  Good countryside for a semi urban area and with a very interesting history which I am just learning about (I’m from Leigh really so have had Wigan knowledge blocked from my education...)

Actually, there’s also another pond with steep sides near the farm, used to belong to Beech Hill anglers.

Possibly frequented by the "Longbrook Poachers" back in the mists of time 😂
