Several months ago I dropped my phone resulting in a hairline crack across the screen. At first it still worked as well as before but slowly its got worse & in the last couple of weeks has got close to unusable. Its a 2017 Samsung (J3 ?) & quotes for replacing the screen suggest I might as well replace the phone.

But almost all the phone currently on the market seem huge & I'd rather something the size of my old phone, about the only exception I've seen is the smallest of the iPhones which if I can find a reconditioned one wouldn't be much more expensive than a cheap Android phone. But do iPhones allow an additional memory card ? At the moment I have a fair amount of music on a SD card to play in the car when either reception is poor (I live in the mountains) or I can't find anything I want to listen to. I guess I could put music on an USB stick.

Any opinions ? Don't want to spend much more than maybe 200 euros if possible

I have a refurbed OnePlus Nord 2T which fits all your specifications. Size (only slightly larger), price and memory card port. It even has a physical three point switch on the side, where you can manually switch between normal, vibrate and silent, a great feature.

Buy a screen and replace it yourself. I got one for an old android phone for about 25 quid and there's loads of videos on YouTube. I found it quite satisfying.

I have a refurbished Sony Xperia which is a nice size. Worth a look. I find their cameras are good and they are pretty robust.

I had one (also Sony Xperia) that died in September after it went swimming. I tried drying it out but with no success. Then, a couple of weeks ago, the alarm went off on it, and last week the screen came back on! 😂 I had charged it a couple of weeks previously as I found it lying around and just thought I would check that it hadn't started working, so obviously it had enough battery to come back to life.

I have a Google pixel simply because it was the only non-apple handset that was acceptably small. Being pocket sized is non negotiable for me, although I must admit at times I do reach for my partner's phone because of the larger screen size.

Any phone unlocker shop will replace the screen in a couple of hours, for peanuts compared to the price of a new phone.

Many thanks to all who replied. Asked for a couple more quotes for changing the screen & all were 80 euros or more, not really worthwhile for a seven year old phone. I suspect in a larger town I might have found someone cheaper but its hardly worth a 2 hour drive on the off chance.

In the end I bought a reconditioned iPhone  (< 2 years old) which is small & was about the price of a new Samsung similar to the old phone & with better performance.
