In reply to mike123: Watership Down?
 tspoon1981 20 Jun 2012
In reply to stujamo: Combine that with "when the wind blows" for a truly depressing evening in with the kids.
 tspoon1981 20 Jun 2012
In reply to mike123: The Goonies, Back to the future, Feivel goes west (feivel, fival, fa??), The rats of nymn, Hook, Batteries not included, Beatlejuice, BFG, BIG

In reply to tspoon1981: Hahahahaha! I liked it! Ok,how about "Dennis"? :O)
 tspoon1981 20 Jun 2012
In reply to stujamo: I have a horrible memory of reading When the wind blows, then watching Watership down on VHS. My childhood world fell apart, and I don't believe I ever truly recovered.

In reply to mike123:

What age are they?

Things that have gone down well with mine (3&6) are Madagascar, anything Scooby Doo (but particularly the feature length films - more the cartoon ones than the more recent movies until recently), Dennis the Menace.

And Star Wars, and Top Gear specials!

I'll have a look what else they've got when I get this one to sleep and can escape downstairs....

In reply to tspoon1981:
the Navigator, Neverending Story, Mighty Joe Young, Legend, Time Bandits, the Adventures of Baron Munchausen, the Last Starfighter, BMX Bandits, the Black Cauldron, Willow, Uncle Buck, James and the Giant Peach, and lastly, and of the Muppet movies.
In reply to mike123: The Disney version of Robin Hood is excellent for kids.
In reply to mike123: Zulu, Carry On Up The Khyber.

Old, classic, suitable.

In reply to mike123:

Shrek, Cars/Cars 2, Monsters Inc. And Alvin and the Chipmunks, which I find much more annoying than any of the others, so I'd give that a miss!
 Blue Straggler 20 Jun 2012
In reply to mike123:

What age are the kids?

Laputa The Flying Island is a good one (arguably ANY Miyazaki would do, but that one is by far the most accessible)
 Blue Straggler 20 Jun 2012
In reply to mike123:

Obscure and rather older than any mentioned thus far (not that this is a competition - it just happens to be a real favourite of mine!):

The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T

Especially if they are taking piano lessons

In reply to tspoon1981: Just misread your post, and thought watership down was a HVS somewhere........

In reply to crustypunkuk: Second your list apart from the muppets, did you mean flight of the navigator?
 Blue Straggler 20 Jun 2012
In reply to stujamo:
> did you mean flight of the navigator?

I'd hope so given that The Navigator is an arty film from Vincent Ward about some medieval Cumbrians who fall through time into 1980s New Zealand!

Most Ghibli stuff (Except Grave of the Fireflies!!) would go down well. My nieces and nephew particularly love My Neighbour Totoro.
 gd303uk 21 Jun 2012
In reply to mike123: Close Encounters.

And not Watership Down. Great film and story but not for the sensitive child. Mine won't watch it because of what they have heard from their friends. I watched it about 50 times as a child, perhaps explians why I'm mental now.
 antdav 21 Jun 2012
Fox and hounds and Sword in the stone were my favourite disneys and ended up buying them on VHS whilst in uni.

I'd steer clear of watership down, krull and pinocchio at a young age, think these films are going to send me to counselling at some point.

There's nowt wrong with the Wis, I loved Will Hay, Norman Wisdom and Stanley Baxter films when I was a lad in the early 80s.

In reply to stujamo:
> (In reply to tspoon1981) Just misread your post, and thought watership down was a HVS somewhere........

Watership Down is a VS at Gogarth, but I bet nobody except me and Geoff Milburn have ever done it
 Al Evans 22 Jun 2012
In reply to A Game of Chance: Has anybody mentioned 'Bambi' or 'Dumbo' yet?
 Al Evans 22 Jun 2012
In reply to Al Evans: When I was a kid 'The Gold Rush' with Charlie Chaplain , I found it so funny that my dad had to keep pulling me from under the seats I was laughing that much. THe scene where he stuck two poatoes on the end of forks and got them to dance was memorable, as was him being followed by the bear. Ah! but life and films were much simpler then.

I used to like Abbott & Costello, and Jerry Lewis, when I was a kid!
