Hello all.

Seems like the place i'll find the most van drivers, so anyone know much about the peugeot expert? i'm looking at getting one for a few reasons-

Reasonable size
3 front seats
peugeots are fairly common and easy to get serviced right?

any advice about any van would be useful, i'm still looking around at the moment.

Cheers

Mike

In reply to mikeryder: Borrowed one regularly, and I loved it. The none turbo one has no get up and go at all, so if I was buying I'm make sure I got the turbo. Not sure about reliability etc, it was fine when I used it!

I detest Peugeots. I do love the French but they tend to poor at configuration control when compared with the Germans, Brits, or Swedes. Peugeot are the ultimate French Farce when it comes to tracking the right parts. They were just as bad 30 years ago but at least then they were amongst the most reliable of the cars available.

my beige peugeot 405 d estate is the second car i ever bought and i've had it 15 years and its done 410,000 kms and has never broken down. it has never not started and always starts straight away. plus its my work car so i don't treat it great. its brill and i love it.

In reply to DEvans:

I don't mean that they are unreliable. What I mean is that there is a long history of finding the right part being a nightmare.

If you had a Peugeot specification that had only been built 5 times during that year then you would probably find that they used 4 different type of rear brake shoe across 5 cars and did not know which was which. Not universal but typical.

I'm looking at getting a Peugeot Boxer at the moment. From what I can figure it has pretty much the same HDi ending that I have in my 306 and that has never let me down. 120,000 miles without a single breakdown. A friend has a 306 with 270,000 on the clock and still performs well.
I certainly have no qualms with the engine and wouldnyt think twice about buying a van with one in.

Colin (Binks) is on his second and has racked up some major mileages without any problems that I am aware of. Thieves rolled it away from his front door ans stole various bits off the front - bumper/grill/lights - it took the dealer months and months to fix it despite being an insurance job.
VERY noisy to travel in and rather odd wallowy ride - not good if you get seasick!

I'd say dont buy French built crap and get something else! I've got a 2 year old 1.6 Expert and done 37,000 miles in it, it's pretty quick really but not at all economical and it's noisy and uncomfortable. It broke down last week and went into "limp mode" with the pollution faulty error on the screen showing, which I have since found out is a very common problem on all Peugeot diesels, the fuel filter was replaced and the fault cancelled at the cost of £134. While it was in the Peugeot garage they said I needed two new tyres at the cost of £195 EACH?! They also wanted to change my front brake pads for £371 and strip and investigate a noisy rear brake for £84, altogether if I let them go ahead with everything they wanted to do it would of cost me nearly £1000 which is an unbelievable rip off, I took the list to my local garage and got everything replaced and fitted for £285!! It's due another service soon and they want £305 to do it. I will never drive another Peugeot again, apart from that yeah they're great get one!

In reply to mikeryder:

hmm not a great deal of love for the expert, anything simmilar anyone can recomend?

p.s. i know several good mechanics and don't dress smart enought to be allowed near a dealership so i won't be getting ripped off on repairs.

Cheers

I have an 02 reg Dispatch with the none turbo engine, getting 40-45 mpg. Ex SOCO so not thrashed like a patrol car and the bloke who had it before me is a mate so I know its history.

Yes its slow but I have no desire to get anywhere at light speed and made a mockery of some higher end motors in the recent snow

Great for carrying dog and MR kit about. Sleeps 2 in comfort 3 at a squeeze.

Can get all the kit in for a family camping holiday and much more. Its basic but at the end of the day its a van if you want all the toys get a higher spec one.

Like you I service it myself and have a 'family' mechanic.

Have a mate who has a 2.0 HDI Expert dog van he loves it to bits

Ive got a 55 reg 2ltr HDI expert, nice mid sized van, pretty nippy to, I wouldn't want the non turbo one mind. Seems pretty economical to, I drove from London to Chamonix at a steady 60 and did it in just about 3/4 of a tank of fuel, came back at 80-90 the whole way and the fuel light came on in Dover, still not bad!

They are quite a nice size, they strike a happy medium between a bigger and smaller van, im doing to insulate, ply and carpet line mine which I think will make it a lot quiter to travel in. Ive had no mechanical issues so far, well touch wood.

Good vans in my opinion.

In reply to mikeryder:I had a Fiat Scudo- same chassis/body as the Expert and Dispatch. I had the 1.9D and it was SLOW! I have a 65mile a day motorway commute and just scraped 35mpg at an average of about 55mph. Really noisy too. But... it was great for all the climbing gear and the bikes, slept two in comfort and made outdoor life generally easier! I would definatley get another just make sure you get a turbo diesel version.

In reply to mikeryder: I ran a turbo dispatch for 5 years.
it was heavily loaded most of the time and still returned 40 mpg.
I did just over 120k miles in it and other than the exhaust falling off at 100k it never let me down.
