Red wine super bargain

Best red wine bargain I have ever come across, currently at Sainsburys. It's a Vine Rosso d'Italia, and no grape type mentioned. In other words it's a blend, and all the better for it.  Most traditional wines made in France and Italy have, until recently, been blends made by vintners with generations of experience. I bought a bottle last week to try it, and went back today for a few more. The offer price is £7.20 I think, which is modest enough. There's then a 25% discount for 6 bottles, so that sounds like about £5.40 a bottle. Ridiculously cheap for a superb wine. I think many people are scared of blends, otherwise this wine wouldn't have lasted a week, There would have been just an empty space. Oh, and it boasts a Decanter Gold Medal, if that impresses you.

Nice one.
Nice lamp by the way.

Thanks for that, I will be trying it if there are any left at Sainsburys in Otley.

It' s been consistently good for the last 3 years. I' ve bought it previously from Morrisons but on my last visit south to Glasgow also noticed it' s in Sainsbury' s as well.  A genuine bargain for the quality.

Thanks for the compliment - we treated ourselves to three made by the same forge, somewhere in Scotland. Then we had three matching shades made too - what extravagance!

I’d never noticed it before. But I did notice 2019 on the label.

Morrisons in Guiseley had it

Thanks, that's even closer for me.

In reply to Rog Wilko:

By coincidence, I spotted it this evening. Shame I hadn't seen this thread beforehand...

This has been stocked in Tesco for a few years now, and is typically £8-9 before any club card offers.  It's been my fall back wine of choice for a long time, so apologies for not spreading the word earlier.

Let’s keep to ourselves, shall we? I’ve noticed how when the wine writers in the newspapers recommend something it all disappears overnight.

Aldi are offering Cairanne from December 11th for one week only at £3.49 an insane price for an excellent wine.

I'm away in Germany 😞 that week.

Purchased 3 bottles for £21 at Morrisons in Guiseley this morning.  Will be opening one tonight!

Fortunately the reach of UKC is still a little lower than the major national papers.

Thanks, I bought a couple of bottles. The labels on mine are a bit more beige, looks white in your photo but I am sure it is the same stuff

I’m suddenly wondering if all you folk are going to be slagging me off tomorrow for recommending rubbish.

OP Rog Wilko 01 Dec 2023
In reply to Blue Straggler:

Don’t worry - it should be a sort of beige.

That’s the power of UKC.

I've not rushed out to purchase.  About 18 months ago, I think it was Rog I had a vinous discussion with about something he recommended in Booths and what is now called the Wine Society's Monastrell, which used to be known as their Southern Spanish red.  I wasn't too fussed about what Rog had discovered in Booths (which is a splendid shop, and happily I was close to one at the time), and he wasn't especially struck on the Wine Society's offering.

Different strokes and all that.  That's why I've not been to Sainsbury's today.

Trying it tonight.

Less acid than is common with some Italian wine. The fact they use partly dried grapes is apparent in a slight hint of sherry.

It may grow on me, but then I prefer the simpler fruity flavours of cheap new world wine...

Thanks for the recommendation, I don't normally choose Italian wines, but enjoying this one right now, on offer in Penrith Morrisons - my new favourite!

You should try Valpolicella ripasso. There are some geat ones in the £8-10 range. You might also like the Negroamara grape. Or the Primitivo (better known as Zinfandel in California). All very dark full bodied reds.

Went to Aldi in Porthmadog this evening with my £3.49p in my hand. Minimum alcohol price in Wales is 50p so the wine was £5.49. 😭 Gutted.

ps. bought two.

In reply to Myfyr Tomos:

I went to my local Aldi this morning as they were opening at 8.00 and they only had five bottles in total which was limited to two per person. I managed to buy three bottles 🍷🍷🍷
