I got some sea monkeys (Triops) for Christmas: any ideas on care? I've got the tank in my Gecko vivarium and they seem to be doing well. They're about 4mm long at the moment. I've heard you can feed them small quantities of fish but i'm worried about polluting the water. Any help much appreciated!

I thought sea monkeys just ate the sea monkey food they come with and other than that you left them to their own devices.

In reply to Tarqs: Sea monkeys don't exist, it's just dirt on the glass.

Ooh ooh where do i get the bananatreats? They sound fun! I'm not sure where my friend got these things from, i haven't seen them anywhere before. They are so cool though, like mini trilobites! The Gecko seems mildly amused by them, but he can't get in the tank so they should be fine.

I got a kit for a ex and we had months of fun with them,, Until she decided to add a goldfish, and hey presto no more Triops and a fat goldfish. they'll cope with any sorta fishy food but loved bloodworms lots..
I dont think they'll need to be as warm as your vivarium will be keeping them but Its Tv for your Gecko.

My snake would love a big pond in his tank and would endeavor to break in and eat whetever it was as soon as he could. Your Gecko must be happy and well fed

The Gadget shop sell all kinds of adventure tanks for them so may do wacky food as well. Mine got boiled when I left them outside in the summer ;~(

they also have much other stuff. the sea monkeys in our office are getting a bit of algae. this is ok as they can eat algae, but the higher temp of a vivarium might encourage too much algae?

I like the sound of adventure tanks, shame yours got boiled. Were you tempted to eat them? I imagine they would taste like freshwater shrimp.

In reply to Tarqs: you'd need a lot before they were a mouthful though. i think they live in salt water,so might taste more like prawns or whatnot.

Thanks for the lead, i'll see if i can get some. I haven't had a problem so far with algae. The viv is out of direct sunlight which i think is the main problem with algae growth. The heat mat they're on keeps the water at 78F which is about mid way through the range suggested. It's a constant temp as well so hopefully they won't get chilly at night!

Ewwwwwwww...I couldn't eat them, they were my pets. we had a funeral for them around the great white telephone.
In reply to Tarqs:

Ah, I think we've got some of these. They just sort of exist, in a little tank on top of the microwave. One of the kids got them as a birthday present I think. We've lost the instructions and I just pop another food pellet in when the previous one has all gone. They all died off once when I accidentally startved them, but then one emerged a few weeks later and lived alone for ages. Then one day, loads hatched and we have about a dozen now. Now I know what they are, I guess I should make more effort to find out how to look after them properly.

In reply to Alison Stockwell:

The instructions i have basically say to feed them just enough or the water will get polluted. Also, you're supposed to use distilled or better still mineral water and keep them at a temp of 74-84F. Once a week you're supposed to remove a third of the water and replace with clean mineral water at the same temp. I think nasty nitrates etc build up otherwise. Let me know if you need any other info, i've still got the instructions.

Risotto might be the way forward, or Thai sea monkey curry!

In reply to Tarqs:

Crumbs, we've had ours for months and never changed the water. They do seem to mate a lot, so they can't be that unhappy.
Little son: "why are those fish riding on each others backs mummy?" Errrrr....
In reply to Tarqs:

How do you replace the water without tipping the fish away?
