What can I do with a lump of Prosciutto?

Bought a lump because by weight it was so much cheaper than the sliced stuff. Didn't really think it through, with no meat slicer or access to one. Have fairly good knives but it's impossible getting it sliced thin enough. So I was wondering what else I could do with it. Can it be boiled or roasted like a ham, or could the slices be fried like bacon? I'll try frying slices anyway but wondered if anyone had any good ideas for something tasty to do with it.

Thick fried steaks of it with piccalily.

Or boil it with cabbages.

Try stuffing a fillet of chicken with it and whatever else you fancy.
In reply to aln: get a really sharp knife and slice thin thin slices off. toast a bagel, spread full fat philly on it and place prociutto on top. better than sex...almost

Sounds unlikely but possibly ok

I'm 100% serious. I don't buy bacon, I buy pancetta and cut my own rashers and eat them with piccalily. I realise prosciutto is different, but I think it would taste good!

Cut it up and put it on a pizza

Great in minestrones and the like, or cooked with beans - just dice, chop, cut into thin strips, whatever you like. Make a bean salad - cannellini beans, olive oil, prosciutto strips. Briefly fry the garlic in a bit of olive oil without browning it (just taking that raw edge off it). Chuck in the beans, add the prosciutto, season, toss, eat. My mouth's watering just thinking about it.

In reply to Bob Kemp: When making minestrone also chuck in the rind of some leftover Parmesan for extra flavour.

You could steady a wobbly table with it.

yes, thats why I specified a sharp knife. you can have the best knife in the world but if it isn't sharp enough you might as well use a butter knife

In reply to aln: Cut a steak. Grill on medium. Serve with chips and poached egg. Like posh gammon. Mmmmm

In reply to aln:

you dont want to do anything with it you just do with bacon.

id say something along the lines of lightly toasted pumpernickle cut thick, a thin layer of olive oil, said proscuitto cut thin and layered, one or two very thin slices of mozarella, couple of capers, basil leaves, alfalfa and a tiny grating of lime rind. maybe a thin slice of avocado and red onion too.

and not bullshit little tasters, but a serious climber sized sandwich so you can watch your friends pick at snickers bars and gels while you eat it on the hill.

In reply to aln:

Have you tried slicing it with a good potato peeler? Won't look elegant - but could probably get thin slices.
OP aln 17 Apr 2011
In reply to alj: No but tried with one of those hand held cheese slicers. Not thin enough.

In reply to aln:

Take it to your local butcher and ask them to slice it? Buy some sausages, and take a bottle of wine as a thank-you!
OP aln 17 Apr 2011
In reply to aln: I had thought of that. He actually does grea pies and cakes as well. But that and the wine would negate the point of getting the prosciutto cheap in the first place. C'mon I'm tryin to be a cheapskate here!
