6x6 medium format SLR

Having played a fair bit with 35mm over the past year, I'd really like to try out medium format, and the square aspect ratio of 6x6 appeals. I'd like to keep with SLR for familiarity and size reasons. Does anyone have any suggestions for affordable cameras of the genre to eBay? Currently looking at the Kiev 6C/60 and its bigger brother, but looking for other suggestions for sensible money and which have lenses available for sensible money too.

If you are talking film, then look at an old Rollei 6x6. Russian stuff is crap!

IMO don't get an SLR first, they are actually much bigger and heavier than a good 6x6 TLR.

Have owned a Bronica SQ, Yashica 124G and Minolta Autocord and I've now sold everything except the Autocord. The image quality for the size and weight is amazing - have taken it hiking lots of times which I wouldn't have done with a 1.5kg+ SLR.

Yashica 124G. Simple, sturdy, great image quality. Not too expensive.

Just checked and it was £750 with an 80mm lens and 120 back, sold on eBay in 2022. Think prices have calmed down a bit since then. It was an SQ-A in amazing condition, pretty sure I only paid £300 about 10 years ago..

Thank you, some food for thought there. For some reason I had assumed that a TLR would be heavier and more awkward, I guess 'because it has two lenses' - completely forgetting about the solid lump of glass prism that it doesn't have as a result.

Another vote for a Minolta Autocord. I have one and it is excellent. Light, easy to use, reliable, and produces great images.

As an alternative, I would also recommend a Mamiya C220. Heavier but very sturdy with little to go wrong, and has some interesting extra features like interchangeable lenses.

Random thought, if finding a cost effective 6x6 is hard.

Many TLRs were made that use 127 roll film. They produced a 4x4 image. they lost popularity and are cheap due to the lack of commericaly avaidable film stock.

Whilst small batch 127 film is expensive if you can get some second hand spools and you can cut down 120 to fit on them. You can develop at home on a standard paterson tank. This assumes you are set up for processing.
