Winter is usually ice and snow, Scottish winter has a lot of snowed up rock that is not often found out of Scotland. Alpine summer is glacier approaches to snow and rock routes, Alpine winter is glacier approaches to ice and iced up rock routes (and is proper cold.)

I know, lots of differences, so why say it as if they are the same??

Ah! They are most definitely not the same! Alpine summer would be big boots and hands, Scottish winter crampons and axe (is that what you were after?)

I think it is simply because there is some cross over of equipment, boots, axe, crampons etc. Plus they are all snowy mountains, I think most people realize pretty quickly that they really arn't the same.

I do know what the differences are. I do know that they are totally different.

What I'm asking is why do people (mainly posters on ukc and writers in the mainstream magazines) use the phrase 'Scottish winter/alpine summer' as if they were the same.

In reply to The New NickB:

Yeah, but it would also be feasible to use the same boots, poons, and axe on Ben Lomond in February as you would on summit day on Everest

Just winds me up whenever anyone says it.

For the record - Scotland in the winter and the Alps in summer are two totally different beasts.

I've never seen this, can you quote?

In reply to jonnie3430:

unless it's used to describe a piece of equipment;

'These boots would be good for Scottish Winter / Alpine Summer.' ?
