Anyone else running around Sheffield tomorrow before we escape into the wonders of Barnsley for the rest of the weekend?

I'm quite looking forward to the mix of venues this year despite definitely not being on my best racing form. Daughters first year being fully on her own on W10B (she's only just turned 8) so there will be a lot of checking that she knows what to do while we do our own courses (she's used to hanging out with other club members at least).

- Sprints will be hilly

- Tankersly is fantastic to race around

- Wharncliffe .... well, I assume I'll be in the ankle breaking terrain for most of the day, so we shall see!

- Relays... I like Middleton Park... our second runner does not.... 3rd knows no better

M45L for me this year.

Ran Wharncliffe in 1978, my first JK and my first camping trip on my own. It snowed that night and we had a lovely time in the snow for the relay at Strines.

I have put my map up on Bluesky and Mastodon #OldOrienteeringMaps.

I failed to run today… terrible start and didn’t get much better. Came close to sacking things off at 11 from 31. Jogged round the rest whilst fuming.

Forgot I’d decided to run up M40L for the weekend… regrets I have many having just had another chest infection.

Whatnecliffe tomorrow, what can go wrong…

Had a shocker in the sprint, went to the wrong start after watching my son finish, ran the 2k to the correct one, obviously was late so started 3 minutes down and already knackered! Didn’t make any obvious mistakes but rounded off the shambles by misjudging the pace slightly and all a big reminder I can’t run for toffee.

Today was much better, ran M45 short (course 12) which was about the right length for me and much more my style, all short difficult legs and dodging through the brambles rather than path running. One big mistake and one medium one but otherwise pretty consistent. Result looks better than it should as anyone decent in M45 ran long or elite, but only the second time in my life I’ve heard my name over a tannoy in conjunction with ‘goes into the lead’!

My son did great winning M14B, he’s one of the youngest in the category so B was a good choice for a boost. Next year will be a lot harder!

Going climbing tomorrow and giving the legs a rest. Great event though, SYO impressive as ever!

My parents were part of the EYOC team helping with the JK that year. I was only 10 but I remember the snow!

Haven't orienteered for many years, but I have happy memories of the sport as a child, on Beverley Westwood in East Yorkshire, and up in Dalby Forest on the NY Moors.

I've had 2 busy JK days so far.  I'm long-term injured at the moment (mystery leg issue...) so I'm just happy to have completed 2 days of running.  I've never had a good run at Tankersley before - so getting around M55L with only one obvious error was great!  Not fast, but at least I got around.

I'd already got up at 6am to cycle the 11 miles to Tankersley so that I could marshal the bus queue between 8:00 and 10:00, then rescue the bike and cycle to assembly ready for a run.  Feeling a tad jaded now...

Would like to run Wharncliffe, but let's see how the body feels in the morning.  I'll be on West Start for the first shift (9:30 - 12:00) - so, no peeping at your maps early...!

Wharncliffe was its usual honest self today. Brutal right out of the start box into tough terrain.

not sure why we were on a 1:15k map on M40L but c’est la vie.
I had an ok run, better than yesterday. Child came second in her category, so I’ll live vicariously through her

Hi Adam, our paths must have crossed! I missed the JK as had a virus, but was out there last night limping round the Medium!

Do you know Jim Twohig?  We have hung out a fair bit the past year or so , sadly i broke my thumb 2 months ago & am not climbing for a while! (bicycle accident)  Cheers Phil

In reply to Dave Todd:

Hi Dave, sorry to hear you're still injured, my calf is now playing up. I missed the JK due to an ill-timed virus. Sigh!

Were you in Latvia orienteering recently?  I love those overseas multi day events..... cheers Phil

In reply to Phil Murray:

Hi Phil - yes, we were in Latvia.  Absolutely ace terrain: runnable forests with endless small contour features and marshes.  I'd definitely go back!  Unfortunately, I rolled my ankle pretty badly on day 1 / leg 3... so that was the end of my running for the trip (and a few weeks afterwards...)  Such is life!

In reply to Dave Todd:

Hi Dave, Argh no, we're both having a lot of issues this year eh! I'm on my 6th now!  Calf packing in!  Thumb nearly OK, but no climbing..... yet.......

I'll have to try Latvia one day. I also love Slovenia & Italy. Also ankle-snapping terrain though .....

In reply to Phil Murray:

Hi Phil, yes I know Jim through Johnny and Zaff. Don’t bump into him so much nowadays but we caught up when Zaff was back last year.

Had a good run on Thurs except for a huge mistake near the start, shambles! Too used to smaller scale maps after the last few events.
