I would like to take the kids skiing in the Feb holidays, we used to drive to Andorro, but thats when we lived in Spain.

I dont want to book flights etc as you never know what the conditions will be like so want to leave to the last min.

If we drive toward the Alps, whats the closest resort with cheap accommodation and good runs etc

In reply to Tufas Mum: were goin Chamrousse in a few weeks, got an utter bargin off www.snowtrex.com, its just past Grenoble, first resort you come too. Snowtrex do self drive holidays, so you get accom and lift pass in the price, and you just have to get there, loads of new apparemtns etc, plus slopes are meant to be deserted during the week. www.chamrousse.com check the webcam loads of snow just come down, more forcast next few days gives you something to get excited about in the run up to it!

In reply to NorthenClimber: yeah, chamrousse is nice and if conditions are crap then it's not too far to les deux alps which has a glacier I think

In reply to MattG: Yeh be under and hour to Les Duex, but Alpe d'Huez is a high resort and thats a little closer.

RE chamrousse, what was the park like when you went? I only want some boxes rails jibs etc, but I've got a feeling they won't have made a park by then?? i'm going on the 13th of dec.

In reply to Tufas Mum: FLaine, Morzine and La Clusaz are among the closer ones.

The above, or Avoriaz etc in the Portes du Soleil area are closest, failing that Chamonix. They're all 8 to 9 hours drive from Calais though its not much further to all the big resorts in the Albertville area, Meribel, Courchevel, La Plagne etc. However the traffic as you approach these can be terrible at half term, Chamonix and the Portes du Soleil avoid the worst of this.
In reply to Tufas Mum: If you go down through Germany, past Munich, the resorts around Innsbruck can be reached by late afternoon off an early ferry or 5am tunnel. We spent our first day in Mayrhoffen in January this year and it was great.
