As a start, I’d recommend heading into one of the big indoor bouldering centres in Sheffield I.e. the climbing works or the depot. I’m guessing they will run some sort of induction classes that will get you started in the right direction. That’s probably quickest way to learn the fundamentals of movement and gain some climbing specific fitness and strength.

I saw a guy on facebook wearing a helmet, i assumed he was a climber and sent him a message.

Turns out he is on the committee for a local climbing club, so that would be my advice...find a club, the one i joined, Lancashire climbing and caving club was excellent and regularly run beginner days out at local crags.

Thanks,I'm assuming I'd need a fair bit of training before I could join a club

Which one of these has the least travel time for you...?

Edit: Reading the blurb on the two websites, both have the expected short induction session but it seems the Climbing Works also offers some additional sessions with coaching available to beginners at no extra charge. This sounds right for you.

Check out the BMC website. You can find lots of information, including your nearest climbing/mountaineering clubs and useful courses. Many clubs encourage novices to join them.

Welcome back.

I had no training and had never climbed before, my first day out was at Stoney Middleton around 3 years ago.

I don't climb much trad at present preferring to boulder, so like others have said a local bouldering wall is a great way of meeting people.

This is perhaps a more extreme example of how to start climbing but this video offers some insights from an expert.

Climbing at height is definitely not recommended until you’ve learned how to protect yourself with a rope but there is nothing stopping just going and finding low, easy, stuff to clamber over.

Typically, climbers used a guidebook to show them where the climbing areas are and to help them to find climbs suitable for their ability. If you crack on with the indoor climbing once or twice a week, by the time the weather improves in the spring you’ll be in a position to go climb stuff...
