my prematurely balding head needs a sunhat to ward off the evil cancer but i cant find any hats that dont make you look like a nobber.
e.g.

bucket hat - kevin and perry go large
baseball cap - urgh
safari/cowboy/aussie hat - bear grylls
cricket hat - your grandad down the pier
TNF/lowe alpine/rohan travel hat - im not 50
boonie hat - fisherman/gun nut

my favourite so far is the boonie hat. any other opinions?

In reply to Alrobertson:

Yeah, go for the boonie hat. Look at it this way. If you look like a gun nut you might look like a prick too but who's going to laugh at you when you might be the next Michael Ryan.

what about a legionaires type hat....i find they work really well and only mildly nob-like.

yes, important issue and one ive struggled with for some time. i think flexibility is the key: coolish days always go for a beanie. but for warmer weather I sometimes break my vow never to wear a broad-rimmed hat: I think the boonie or baseball (with cool logo) are the only options...

In reply to Alrobertson:
one of those squashy felt hats worn by people in alpine regions, or perhaps elegant like those early 20th century tyrolean guides
 Marc C 21 May 2007
In reply to johnj: Felt trilby with leather hatband is cool. You can get one - think it's brand name is 'Crush n Pack' - which bounces back into shape.
 Tiggs 21 May 2007
In reply to Alrobertson: The only suitable hat for summer wear is a Panama (not too wide brimmed though) with a colourful hatband.....

<you can buy ones that roll up too>

In reply to Alrobertson:

well, from a brief assessment of your ukc gallery.

The beanie suits you, but you obviously want to go for something less warm in the summer.

how about a buff (can shade your neck as well) or the bandanna that someone else has suggested?

do you currently have the beard or no beard? this would affect your choice of hat!

In reply to Alrobertson: panama hat - Honorary consul / Our man in Havana kind of vibe.
 Marc C 21 May 2007
In reply to Tiggs: The crush n pack trilby has rendered the panama obsolete But for 'ubercool n ubertrendy' headwear, those berets the US and British Olympics teams wore a few years ago were the mutts' nuts

(note to self: must try to remember how to tie my bandana)

In reply to Alrobertson: Get a safari hat - you will then look just like the cowboys in "Brokeback Mountain".
 Tiggs 21 May 2007
In reply to Marc C: But the trilby is for cooler weather as is the beret and makes for a sweaty head and 'hat hair'. The Panama facilitates a cool head, for added sweat absorption (if needed) a jaunty cotton bandana could be worn underneath

In reply to Alrobertson:

What you need is several hats.

Flat cap/baseball cap for when it's sunny.
Buff for underneath your hat and for protecting your neck, and for turning into a balaclava when the midgies come out.
Beanie hat for when it gets colder.
Maybe a sunhat too.

Any hat with a peak on it is not good for climbing in though, unless you turn it around backwards. My advice is to not worry too much about what it looks like, and ask yourself how you'd look with a sunburnt head.
