'The 23.5m ‘Tall Wall’ area is now complete and the scaffolding is due to be taken down this week. There’s a certain ‘WOW’ factor that we’re anticipating when we can finally see the full area cleared! This area is all high vertical routes with nine lines at 23.5m, six at 19m and six at 14m (three routes on each line).'

Hopefully 'this area is all high vertical routes' doesn't mean exactly what it says - having such a high wall all plumb vertical would be a real missed opportunity imo.

I went to see it last week and to stand up against the wall and to look up definitely gives you the wow factor....

Hi Ian

We looked at many different set ups for this area and given the limited floor space, the vertical scenario works best for what we want to provide. This is definitely not a missed opportunity! Hopefully you will realise this when you see the wall (if you visit).

Thanks for your interest

Hi Tim

There's 18 lines that are 'off vertical'. 16 of these are 13.5m, 1 at 12m and 1 at 10m in height.

Thanks for your reply. I may well visit but it sounds like the bouldering may be of greater interest, though as you say that may change when I see the wall. For me personally long vertical walls aren't a great training facility - Manchester suffers to a certain extent from the fact that the headwall on its long wall could do with being a little steeper and I certainly wouldn't look for something less steep than that. Not that I blame you for designing a wall that makes best use of your space for the most people.

Ian, why not pop over to Liverpool Awesome Wall? That back wall is so pumpy that I'm getting pumped right now just thinking about it!

Good luck with the wall anyway.

Ah... there's a point , imho the back wall is just too steep for training for UK climbing (particularly for someone with my feeble shoulders!), the right hand stepped walls has a great initial angle but the last bit is again just a bit too near vertical leading to routes often having to finish very crimpy or very slopey.

Climbers, never happy

Hi Tim

Lets just say that there are many wall’s at many angles. There’s no ‘straight’ off vertical (like the blue O/H in L’pool) in Stockport. All of the lines change angles. The most overhanging wall is 3.5m, 13.5 high.

Hope this helps.

Using Dave's figures of 3.5m overhanging on a 13.5m wall makes the angle just under 15 degrees...
