There is also a unique chance to see the 1970s film of the epic first ascent of the south face of Annapurna introduced by Sir Chris Bonington and Doug Scott. Probably the first screening since the 1970s, visitors to the summit will be treated to this amazing piece of mountaineering history which includes footage of Dougal Haston and Don Whillans in a fierce storm on the summit.
It will be a very full day. There will be films, and interactive discussions with people who have made adventure the centre of their lives as writers, explorers and climbers. As well as Sir Chris Bonington and Doug Scott there will also be Adele Pennington, Colin Mortlock, Julie Summers and Ed Douglas.
Three interlinking themes will explore the psychology and attractions of adventure. Why is it a crucial part of many people’s lives? Is adventure associated with risk, extremes or is it a state of mind. Does it matter whether you are a Himalayan climber or weekend explorer? What connects excitement and a sense of well being? Are there lessons to be learnt or is it just thrills people seek?
