Always the best policy is to find the best possible forecast and plan accordingly

And..... my advice for Font rain (speaking from experience),

For periodic rain:

1) head to crag that MAY be dry
2) Take jet boil and brew making paraphenalia,
3) at first arrival at said crag, find suitable (but not used) over hanging boulder and dump all stuff
4) ensure suitable boulder has view of 2 good sized trees, about slacking lining distance apart.
5) Erect slack line.
6) Play on boulders where possible, as rain descends, head for overhanging boulder, stick the kettle on and laugh at each other falling off aforementioned slack-line

Voila..... making the best of bad weather!!

Heavy rain:

Duvet day with laptop and films in tent!

In reply to staceyjg:

And for REALLY heavy rain.... send someone ahead to erect your tent before you arrive

Don't worry, I've got enough experience of dealing with Font + Rain.

We had snow one Easter a few years' ago. Try to imagine the walk in to Cul de Chien covered in a layer of snow rather than sand - gorgeous. And yes, we did still boulder once the snow had stopped and the sun came out.

In reply to ChrisJD:

Font in the rain is grim.

But hey ho there's always the Chateau, the Cyclops, canoeing in the Lys, a trip up to Paris on the train, and the Somme battlefields, all within easy reach....

Plus French wine, French cheese, French food generally...

You're just unlucky really as the last couple of weeks has been a really splendid, unnatural nearly, spell of spring weather - sunshine all day, not a cloud in the sky but not too hot. I can't remember when it last rained. There was a similar spell last autumn.

Personally I regret not having made use of the weather to spend a week in England, now it looks like we're going to catch the rain when we go.

PS. Not trying to rub salt in the wound or anything

Are these forecasts any good? The web is full of useless weather sites alongside the more accurate ones. Thought Meteo France was the most reliable for Font and it seemed OK last I looked.

In reply to Offwidth:

It's brilliant weather here today and looking at Meteo France they give it as holding until next Friday now, yesterday they said the rain would come on Thursday, so there seems to be a good chance for most of next week. The farmers in Seine et Marne are already complaining about the drought!

Sunday was amazing weather - cool and blue skies.

Monday looks like it will be the same. lets hope the forecasted change for tues/weds is very wrong!

In reply to Bruce Hooker: The thing is I can remember watching the weather forcasts every year about this time, hopeing for no rain over Easter for our FOnt trip. For all the visitors, I really hope they have a good time and no rain, but my garden really could do with some rain, I didn't expect to have to water plants this early in the year.

Or you could hedge your bets and see if the climbing at Buthiers is dry, and if not use the indoor wall http://www.base-de-buthiers.com/escalade-en-salle-l72-fr.html

In reply to ChrisJD:

the forecasters seem to be using something based on a simple random number generator...

Weds - another stunning clear blue sky and cool day. Now forecast to hold rest of week....does that actually mean rain is coming??!!

And I hear the UK is back in winter mode.
 Bruce Hooker 04 Apr 2012
In reply to ChrisJD:

We had some rain last night (30kms N of Fontainebleau forest). Today is set fine with rain this evening, then sun again for the weekend, so all in all not too bad.

In reply to ChrisJD:

Just went for a hair cut walking through a blizzard in Nottingham. Forecast for Font on Meteo France has suddenly turned pants over the bank holiday weekend... hope its wrong but we are off to Cornwall instead now... cheaper and as we have picked up a bargain cottage deal we dont mind the odd shower.
 Bruce Hooker 04 Apr 2012
In reply to Offwidth:

Yes, it seems to be changing on Meteo France, fair on Thursday, sunny all day Friday but then rain again on Saturday... no snow though. I remember an Easter at Fontainebleau, we had planned a walking weekend and camping but it started snowing so much that the paint marks of the paths were covered and we weren't equipped for snow, so we came home.

You're better off in Cornwall anyway, at least there's some proper rock there, not just boulders
