I've come to accept the stench (my girlfriend hasn't though...) of my old shoes, but having just got some new ones I want to try and keep it at bay for as long as possible.
In reply to alooker: My shoes used to stink, and I discovered that I could stop the smell by always putting them on the outside of my pack with the laces loose, and the tongues pulled up. Lets the sweat evaporate and stops your shoes from festering. Haven't had any really toxic shoes since.
