Hydrophobic chemicals have been around for a while now.

Anybody can make something waterproof. Just cover it in plastic. The problem is being able to make something that is waterproof and also breathable.

Such coatings have been around for a while.

You can buy toilet bowls with these coatings.

The problems seem to be cost and durability.

And think of the DWR coating and how new waterproofs behave, compared to old waterproofs.
