Chris Bonington walking in the Lake District, 3 kbDetails have been announced of plans to mark the 80th birthday of Sir Chris Bonington, the UK's most famous mountaineer and a global climbing icon.

Bonington has turned 80 today (6 August). Very recently, Sir Chris lost his wife Wendy to motor neurone disease (MND) and will use his 80th as an opportunity to improve awareness of the condition, for which there is no cure and about which very little is known.
