Slightly odd request but this place is good for those sometimes.

I'm after tiles for my hearth, I want subway/metro type (brick format), either flat or with the traditional bevel in bold colours (cobalt blue ideally) but with a hand-glazed appearance so there's some colour variety between tiles and across the surface of each.

Example in grey http://www.houzz.com/hand-glazed-tile
Example in green http://www.fireplace-tiles.com/tile-6-x-2-hand-glazed-tile-pln

I've found a fair few beautiful handmade examples but they come with handmade prices I can't afford since there's ~2sqm. There must be something nice but affordable out there, any ideas?

Have you tried ebay or architectural salvage yards?

Look up 'original style' - we fitted their tiles in our bathroom and were very pleased with the quality. They do floor tiles as well.

Ebay is usually good for this sort of thing but didn't turn much up. The salvage yards I've seen online didn't have anything of interest and what they do have tends to be pricy. Might be worth seeing if there are any locally to actually visit though. Thanks.

Cheers, I've seen their stuff before, the mosaics are lovely but not especially cheap IIRC. I'll have a look browse, see what else they do.

Good suggestion, thanks. I'd seen those and they're exactly the sort of thing I'm after but my partner doesn't like them for some reason. Might get a few samples, see if that wins her over.

Might you be able to delay the finishing of the fireplace and spend a few months gradually buying the expensive tiles?

It can be worth it if you're only going to be spending the money once on something...

Have you checked out Fired Earth Tiles?

Yeah, they're lovely but I can't really justify the cost.

Really cracked it - for some reason this page doesn't show on the colour range page but is a separate line.

It's not a bad suggestion and in this case I might bite the bullet (if my partner can be convinced!) as it'll be the central feature of the main living space but my problem is more keeping control of costs for the whole project rather than affording nice things on a one off basis. If it's going to be how I want it at a price that makes sense (given modest income and eventual resale value) I'll have t be careful to spend money only where I absolutely have to.

You don't have to convince me I've ordered samples to see if they can win my mrs over but I'm anticipating exasperation.

Subterfuge?

I think there's a healthy amount in most relationships, there was in my parents at least, they were very happily 95% straight forward with one another.
