One of my all time favourites, but the intro is more about Ian MacLagan's keyboard

I really can't even rate that as a good intro never mind the best....different tastes and all that!

I'm not sure what I'd vote for, there's too many to choose from. Also a lot of mine would be from the proggier kinda of songs where defining the end of the intro is tricky.

Maybe Trial of Tears by Dream Theater....I'm sure a few of theirs would be in my list anyway.
ooh....the 'live at the Budokan' version of Hollow Years, nearly forgot that one.

for a simpler one, more groove than technical, probably would include some Hendrix (Purple Haze?), some Stones, some Led Zep.

Yeah if I wasn't just taking 5 from a nightmare day of work I could probably have quite a fun afternoon now listening to a load of songs for this :-p

edit - whoops forgot Floyd!

Good choice. Sets the shimmering, dreamy tone of the album nicely

I used to like widdly-diddly metal intros but I'm not so fussed now. Instead I'd pick:
Gift by Sugar. Could almost be Kevin Shields for a bit.
Autre Temps by Alcest. Nice cheesy Celtic feel to it.

Sonic Youth....yes...how about Dirty Boots or for a similar dreamy intro Sweet Jane by The Velvet Underground?

In reply to cb294: Just so.

There's plenty others to choose from too. Waterfall by The Stone Roses is good. It isn't Gimme Shelter by the Stones though; not saying it's bad, far from it, it just sounds nothing like the rest of the song so it isn't really an introduction to it.

These 'Best guitar intro' and 'Best riff' threads are pointless. All we get is a random list of classic rock tracks. They're classic for a reason....cos they have great intro's and riffs!

It's actually impossible to choose the 'best'

Having said that, the best guitar intro is Symptom Of The Universe by Black Sabbath.

That's been my phone ringtone since forever. I love it, though the feedback at the start gets me some odd looks when the phone rings in public.

Teenage Riot is a great call - very atmospheric build up to a great song. For something totally different how about a guitar intro thats not even on a guitar - Maggie May's intro is something else (and I'm not a RS fan). Ian

Gimme shelter.

Way before my time, but still head and shoulders above everything since.

In fact, not just the best intro, a good shout for the best song of all time.

The atmosphere of menace, the sense that mayhem and madness were/are just below the surface of society. Apocalyptic.
