I've read a little bit about the route and every description I've read advises to do it with someone who knows the route the first time.
Well I don't know anyone that has been there so has anyone done this 'climb' and it is navigatable without prior knowledge of the route.

I think it would take a lot away from the experience if you were with someone who knew where they were going. We did it fine with just a description.

I agree with the above, we used this description - http://snakesandladdersandtunnels.blogspot.co.uk/ part of the fun was worrying we were on the wrong rusty ladder/in the wrong tunnel!

Just leave a lot of time - there is lots to explore.

We did it by the guidebook description and had no major problem with the routefinding.

Yes, easily doable without having done it before. I'd suggest abseiling into dali's hole as well as going to the bottom of mordor to check out the blocked off tunnels as well.

We just went. It was fine.
The "hidden" tunnel is much more obvious (far side of the scree and lower down) than the route descriptions make it sound. other than that it's all obvious.
