Sad news this morning. The 37 year old Italian rider, who had just won a stage in the Tour of the Alps and was expected to lead the Astana team in the forthcoming Giro d'Italia was killed whilst out on a training ride near his home in Italy. He was reported to have been knocked off his bike at a road junction by a van driver who allegedly 'did not see him' . (Cycling News)

There's a video of him on Twitter cycling while his parrot flew alongside him. It made me smile and broke my heart at the same time.

Very very sad and a great loss to cycling, he was the nominated Astana leader for this year Giro too - all very heart breaking to be honest
