 Team BMC 24 May 2017
Come along to our next gathering of climbers and walkers in the North West and get involved in the work of the BMC. Area meetings are run by volunteers and are your chance to join in with debate and influence decisions about what happens in your area as well as the rest of the country.

Date: Monday 5 June 2017, starting at 7.30pm (food from 7.00pm)
Venue: Holden Arms, Grane Road, Haslingden, Lancashire BB4 4PD

The pub is less than a mile from Troy Quarry for those desperate for a pre-meeting climb!

All are welcome; food will be provided by the BMC.
See the BMC Local Areas site for more details: http://community.thebmc.co.uk/Event.aspx?id=3867

Upcoming events include clean-ups at Troy Quarry and Pex Hill and the possible placement of fixed anchors at the top of Pex to remove any need to use the fence.
Get the chance to give YOUR input to the BMC governance review.

Unfortunately can't make it but please discuss the bullet hole vandalism on the Rappel Wall of Wilton 3. Mega amount of damage from repeated up close firing of bullets into the rock. Holds broken and all sorts.

What else should i expect from a bunch of Yankee wannabe gun-toting f*ck wits.

Your tolerance of other peoples interests is inspiring.

In reply to J1234:
It's mainly my intolerance of deliberate crag vandalism. Go take a look for yourself and see what you think.

I have been many time, it is your provocative language I take issue you with, you do understand this is a public forum and the gun club can see it.
 woodsy 29 May 2017
In reply to J Whittaker:

I understand the issue but what a totally inappropriate way to express yourself about a club we are in partnership with on a public forum.

In reply to woodsy:

Well if you boys wanna play the PC card enjoy.

But note I didn't say it was the gun club. Obviously someone with a gun...bullets don't shoot themselves. If the gun club is a respectable group im sure they wouldn't condone someone vandalising the space they use as well.

In reply to J Whittaker:

Hi This was discussed at a previous meeting.
I made the assumption that it was the gun club for obvious reasons.

However it is not.
There have been lots of issues with illegal shooting and members of the public using the range.

The gun club has strict rules and guide new shooters. In their view if shooters are missing the massive sand pit they receive one warning then on the next occasion are asked to stop entirely.

You will notice on occasion lots of broken glass and random objects that have been left behind.
This again is defiantly not the club as they use targets.

On the plus side there will soon be some quality Mono boulder problems

But seriously Gun clubs advise is if you sees anyone shooting that are not displaying the red flags or on non shooting days.
Phone the police and tell them you have seen some suspicious persons unloading guns and heading in to a quarry.
I can imagine the armed response unit will be happy to come and escort them off the premises.

Sadly the Holden arms closed this weekend as far as I can tell. If you need steering to another venue can I suggest the green squirrel pub. Best ales in town.

Thanks Stuart. I did think it was more likely to be some mindless individuals (hence the gun toting yankee comment - shootin' up bottles, yeehaa!) seeing as i have only noticed the damage in recent months. I didn't notice anything whilst climbing there last year.

That would suggest it isn't the club as they have used the premises for years without incident. I've only ever come across one guy from the club whilst climbing there and he was a perfectly fine gent.

So why are people going to waste time discussing it, there is zero that can be done, unless your volunteering to sit a 24 hour guard on Wilton 3.

Is this still the case? Is there an alternative venue?

My thanks to Chalkyjim and some others who alerted me to the closure of the Holden Arms. The buggers seem to have left a few people in the lurch!

Please note that the date and time remain the same but the venue is now The Black Dog, Belmont. Apologies all!

The Holden Arms by Troy Quarry? I remember popping in there for a pint after a session at Troy and perusing the menu - it was a Sunday. They listed the options - beef, lamb, chicken etc and at bottom they had 'Vegetarian Option - just have the vegetables'.
