Female political leaders are very much centre stage in British politics at the moment. The Conservatives, SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Green Party, the DUP, Sinn Fein are all led by Women.

Why has the Labour party never had a female leader despite some very strong candidates now and in the past?

I was always left wondering why Harriet Harman didn't become leader. Or Margaret Beckett come to that. Maybe they weren't left wing enough.

Harriet harman was always electoral poison to most floating voters. Margaret Beckett is a bit dull. Barbara castle was too early for the idea of a female leader. Yvette cooper seems the most convincing I can think of, and she got seen off by the corbyn revolution.

Technically both Beckett and Harman have been leader of the Labour Party, in Harman's case twice.

Yes but only on a stand in basis. The Labour party have never elected a female leader.
