Can you explain how this gay marriage thing is going to work in Australia?

As I understand it from deep study of Monty Python sketches all the men in Australia are called Bruce and all the women are called Sheila. So, if two gay people get married they'll have the same surname; if their surname is Smith they'll both be Bruce Smith. Isn't that going to get really confusing?
