Great! Lets hope it's the beginning of a new and better time for Zimbabwe and that it is not just exchanging one despot for another.........

Shame the piece of shit didn't have the balls to do it in public in the same way that he has reigned, with tyranny, all these years. Even this week he was publicly defiant; why not show the people that he still has 'courage' now he doesn't have the backing of the criminal thugs and elite of the PF.

He and his sap draining wife should both have their assets stripped and passed back to the people and then allowed to leave the country with only a bootstrap to their names.

More like they should be imprisoned until their deaths for the misery they have presided over.

Who would have them?

Omar Al-Bashir?

You know it's big news because the BBC drags John Simpson out of the care home to sound pompous for the masses.
Even he couldn't pretend that this was likely the start of a new democratic nirvanha. Maybe the "crocodile" has got it out of his system and turn over a new leaf, maybe.

Sorry to sound cycnical but I get a feeling of groundhog day.

Good idea except that I would bet he has already stashed away a fair bit of cash overseas*

*Edit, I was right, the amount is rumored to be over US$1 billion, why am I not surprised, link here

By letter, I believe.
If I draft a similar letter and send it to No: 10, do you think Mrs May & her cabinet would sign it?

Another socialist who ruined once prosperous country (far from perfect before). Zimbabwe deserves a better fate although it will not be easy because it was not only him responsible for the misery but many of those who overthrew him as well

I happen to agree but was trying to show some humanity.

Can this criminal wealth not be seized?

Aye. I remember apartheid Rhodesia. Not exactly a bed of roses for the locals either. But the revolution went sour....

In reply to pavelk:

Mugabe was happy to label himself a socialist, a nationalist, a patriot....etc.
The evidence suggests he was none of these things, just another greedy despot.

By all means let's debate the utility of socialism, but let's not start with the silly logic which says Mugabe was a socialist, Mugabe was bad, so Socialism is bad. Please!

I wish. I hope so. Wouldn't it be great if it was all returned to the people of Zimbabwe

Most of it will be in off shore accounts / Swiss banks, I wonder which country he will flee to / settle in ?

Apparently his wife has a multi-million dollar mansion in South Africa. That might be a clue.

Good luck with that. I’m not hopeful.

Given the scenes of all round joy from the people, can someone explain how on earth he held onto power?
He must have a powerbase somewhere that terrified everyone, where and who are they. Or am I missing something?

Didn't she use her diplomatic immunity to escape south Africa after that assault? Perhaps they will sweep it under the carpet if the money is there.

I would think that's more than likely. Apparently the Vice President who, constitutionally will take over, is a Grace Mugabe supporter. Very early days; too early.

My hope is that he lives out a long retirement in the care of the Zimbabwean health system that he wrecked.

Meet the new tyrant, same as the old tyrant.

Ideally he and his wife would be tried for criminal offences committed over the last three decades, but it’ll be tricky to make anything stick.
If they are found guilty then imprisonment would seem appropriate, it’s what we do here and advocate for democracies elsewhere.

It’s a bit like the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequent trashing of all the Stasi offices. Weird black swan type event. Millions held in thrall by what, fear?

Bit different that, there was a real change in power. Reads like old successor wasn't happy with being replaced by new successor, so forcibly took power. Coup within the ruling group, I guess a change of leader might make a difference but there's no real reason why.

Crowds cheering doesn't need that many people really, people who are happy with the regime but not with Mugabes choice of who's next maybe?
