hello,

my name is simon and  i contacted my local council about the possibility of building some outdoor bouldering walls at local parks. the local parks in my home town of portsmouth (hampshire) have things like lawn bowls, skateparks (drug hangouts), childrens parks, tennis courts (for boring people), outdoor table tennis tables and some have fitness/sport centres. i think it would be good to have some small bouldering walls put up. they would be kind of permanent, so no change to the layout of the holds. they would require soft ground below them, like the ground in the kids play park. the issue is safety so the height, type of holds and ground are important. maybe 8/10 feet in height, two posts with wooden boards across. this would allow for a wall either side. maybe three of these, providing six walls in total. difficulty levels, three for kids and three for adults. so three would have large easy to use holds and three with regular holds of differing size. the ground areas only have to be large enough to cover the fall area.

what do you think?

it is like the outdoor fitness equipment dotted around the city. admittedly no one uses them but this is an activity that could be seen as fun, mostly for kids. after a first climb up a wall in chichester i got out of breath and my whole body felt the effect. it is a complete body workout. requires coordination and all that great stuff.

i am waiting on the council for a response. i suggested that i try to raise the money some how. may be just one park for starters and a single wall (two sides, easy and slightly harder).

I think you are prejudiced against skateboarders. Climbers take drugs too.

Doesn't work, seen it in Spain. Permanent plastic holds become polished in no time with all manner or punters in trainers climbing on the holds all day long, you end up with shiney holds no 'climber' wants to touch. Plus without maintenance the holds tend to loosen up and spin. Don't waste your time.

to be more helpful than my previous comment...

Councils are unlikely to be enthusiastic about anything made from timber/boards beceause it is too vulnerable to vandalism. Concrete boulders tick a lot of council’s boxes for public facilities, but the cost of boulders big enough to be interesting to climbers will start well into five figures.

I once successfully lobbied my local council for a skatepark. It took quite a lot of work. My advice would be get a group of enthusiastic people together and communicate the benefits/popularity of climbing to the council. And don’t give up

i know of several places with outside vertical traversing walls, so your idea isnt that unlikely. plus the boulders in glasgow (and i think similar idea in london somewhere?). its worth a shot, although dont expect anything worthwhile to a decent climber to be put up, it is unlikely to work. maybe try showing the council other examples in your lobbying, eg the boulders in glasgow and london. the walls i am thinking of are in cardiff bay, aston keynes water park (cotswold water park) and cairngorm ski centre base station to name a few. try googling them.

And I bet the lawn bowlers take more drugs than the skateboarders and climbers combined.

I'm not sure when this was built in Poole, but when I last looked it had chalk on some of the smaller holds and looked OK to use. You can't see from the photos, but a couple of the walls have overhanging sections.
