Sheffield and much of the Peak is enveloped in smoke from the fire at the Roaches.

We've driven down to Matlock and managed to escape it, so I just thought I'd put a quick post up for anyone wanting to do the same.

We're fine further north in New Mills and surrounds. The sun's even out!

Near smog driving through Stoney Middleton this morning, smokey and peaty.

To my shame, I spent the rest of the journey thinking more about single malt rather than eco devastation.

In reply to Dan Arkle:

I’m not sure that is from the roaches, i’m In Calver, and it looks like it’s coming from the direction of Eyam. Maybe more than one fire?

Cheers Dan.

Is camping at Birchen tonight a bad idea then?

Took a bike ride down to the Matlock area today. No smell of smoke around Sheffield / Chesterfield but you could smell it from around Cromford to Alfreton.

I noticed the smell of smoke early yesterday morning. I assumed it must be local but later I met with a friend who knew a fireman and said it was in Staffs. I was amazed that smoke would travel that far. After seeing the drone footage it makes sense though.

I wonder what started it. The news says it started in a woodland.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a barbecue.

I think I'm going to notice the difference next time I go there.

Looks horrendous but hopefully it will recover quickly.
