She comes across as incredibly dull and unimaginative, and here we all are!

Yawn inducing. The interviewer seemed at pains to get something interesting out of her but to no avail, such as-

"One of the more striking revelations about a book that had shaped her centred on Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, the 1962 text that is sometimes credited with laying the foundations of the modern environmental movement.

May had not read it but said that it had shaped her mother’s thinking..."

She'd not even read it. I could go on for ages about books my Mum has read but why?

"A world weary sigh escaped the pursed lips of Inspector Jacques Piton. In a lifetime of serving with the Zermonix Gendarmarie he thought he had encountered it all. He had kept mournful vigil as the broken bodies of climbers had been brought down from the jagged peaks of the valley He had ended decades of feuding between the dynasties of the Milka family and the Toblerones and the great Almond wars of '68-69 were now just memories.  'He had even cracked the case of the Telepherique pusher, but this morning had bought grim news. The worst. With a palpable sorrow that such things had come to his valley he picked up the phone. He was wise enough to know when help from the city was needed.

Allo? Hercule?

Yes I'm fine, I need your grey cells mon ami, some bastard 'as run through old Tugwalders cornfield....

Yes.... a cerial killer....."

I suspect that many current Conservatives have not read any of the founding texts of conservatism either.

Coincidence but I was just reading this in the last week. Obviously a seminal book.

First Archer on Mallory, now May on Whymper.

What next? Gove on Shipton? Davis on Mummery? Lilley on Pilley?

There's a few existing titles that would work without any modification:

Scott Smith's 'A Simple Plan';

John D. McDonald - 'The Deep Blue Goodbye';

And of course, The Grifters...

A Short Walk In The Hindu Kush is an excellent book. Thanks for the reminder, I read my Dad's copy a long time ago, must read it again. It's real adventuring and exploring.

Sounds like the interview itself was proper gripping stuff, to quote from the Grauniad article: "Interviewed for an hour..."! As if Grainger was struggling to fill time asking if she'd ever read a book about anything.

Sorry for the derail (especially coming so soon after UKC Post of the Year by DerwentDiluted), but have you read The Last Grain Race?
