I very stupidly rushed it and came up with an obscure idea for step 3, when the correct answer was staring me in the face ...
i thought of an obscure gemstone first- duh
My normal (easy mode) starters left me two options only (I think) at row three: the gemstone and the correct, less obscure, answer. So a three for me today.
Martin
You weren't the only one, but I could see no good reason to assume that it wasn't likely to be the answer.
Is there any logic I'm assuming that the most common word is more likely to be the answer?
Exactly what I did. I felt a right chump when I saw the answer.
> Is there any logic I'm assuming that the most common word is more likely to be the answer?
It depends. In today's case I think it's likely that both possible answers are in the Wordle selection of 2000 or so from which the answers are chosen. If the answers are chosen at random from that list, then there's no reason to favour the more common word. But on previous occasions I think it's at least probable that at some of the choices I've been left with aren't on the list ("wight", "hight" etc). So, over all Wordle's, I think I stand a better chance when left with guesswork if I choose the more common word. But it was just luck that it worked for me today.
Martin
This article - https://slate.com/technology/2022/02/perfect-wordle-guessing-strategy.html - answers your question (solution words are weighted towards common/popular words), and much more about optimal strategies.

I thought today's was quite easy, but I must say I'm very impressed how people like you manage to do it in just two steps. I don't know how that's possible, beyond a very inspired guess, because Crossword Solver shows that from your first step above there were 54 possible answers.
I had the same first step, and this was how it went for me:
Wordle 269 3/6
🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜
⬜⬜⬜🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
Well of course it was lucky or inspired, however as has been much debated you apparently ignored your two certainties and used another safe probe, making a two impossible. I'm more of a seat of the pants guy.
I don't use crossword solver or any aids.
Surely the idea that there is a perfect strategy relies on the assu, ption that we all play in the same way?
Many people seem to enjoy posting that they solved it in the fewest possible attempts possible, my aim is quite simply to solve it quickly within the 6 attempts that are allowed.
Interesting, I've had 6 sixes, several due to inattention I.e using already discounted letters again. I'm keen to keep my 100% record, after four lines I get a bit nervous.
I did not ignore the two certainties - of course I kept them: that gave me (deliberately here using different letters, not to help those who haven't done today's puzzle yet):
A - B - - -
As I say, I've retrospectively used Crossword Solver to find out as a matter of interest just how many possible 5-letter words there were with those letters in that position; and as I say, there were 54.
Of course, I NEVER use Crossword Solver when I'm doing the puzzle. That would be like doing a quiz by looking up all the answers. Completely pointless.
Apologies if I implied that you were cheating it was inadvertent.
Back to technique; you kept the two certainties in your head, not on the grid. This means a two is impossible surely?

> Can you explain hard mode? My understanding is that you've got to use the yellow letters on subsequent goes? Isn't that just 'sensible' mode? Perhaps I misunderstand?
In "hard" mode you have to reuse all green and yellow letters as appropriate.
In "easy" mode you can mentally store the information but use another word altogether which also uses commonly occurring letters and see what comes up. This may help you better towards the solution but makes it impossible to score a two.
We have had lively discussions about this on several threads. I always obey hard mode.
Me too - thought they might go for another one of 'those' words but the march to 100 continues!
It's sensible in that it gives a definite chance that your next guess will be correct, but it won't always be the optimal strategy.
For example, if you get to
_ A R E D
with 2 guesses left, you have a choice of B, C, D, F, H, P, R etc. so getting it in 2 won't be likely. However, if you concoct a word using as many of the possible options as you can (like CHORD), there's a very good chance one of them may turn orange or green so you'll have your answer on the last go.
well done again- big day tomorrow for hat-trick of 2s. are you thinking of switching?
Hmm, I make up my mind which of my two starter words to use at the last minute. Then I try to incorporate elements of my other starter word in line two whilst obeying the "hard" etiquette.
I may stick with today's starter till it fails.
> It's sensible in that it gives a definite chance that your next guess will be correct, but it won't always be the optimal strategy.

Only possible in "easy" mode of course, but I work on similar lines using "route" and "snail" - exactly the same letters as "louse" and "train" - all the "one" scoring letters in Scrabble. Good one today!
Potentially a v easy one to start with. Big snag: it then left you to guess for the remaining letter one of three possible consonants. So then it was just pure luck - not very satisfactory. I was unlucky and got the correct answer on my third guess, but I could have solved the whole thing on my first (i.e. in just 3 moves). So it took 5 moves:

unlucky. i had 4 consonant options for second letter:

That's a very nice trident though!
Hard mode.
Wordle 294 1/6

a VERY fortunate first word! My first 1, and probably my last ...
TaDaa!
I think this may be the first answer to contain only letters that score one in scrabble (which is the criterion I use for my first guess).

Yesterday it occurred to me that, in the 72 Wordles I had done, there had never been a Q, X or Z.
Are these letters rarer in Wordle than in “real life”?
googling my own question came up with this: https://leancrew.com/all-this/2022/01/wordle-letters/
There was an X recently, and another one, plus a Q since Christmas.

I'd have preferred a 3 but it is nice to get the solution without having had any greens before.
Very hard today. Took me half an hour to make the last step. It nearly had me on the ropes.
