Got a week in North Wales coming up with our 2 month old - looking for bouldering/sport options that are baby friendly...

So far we have:

Cromlech Boulders

RAC boulders

Caseg Fraith

Mayfair wall sport (maybe - can't remember what the base of the wall is like)

Any other recommendations? Would love to find some sport/slate options. Basically need a flat base and an easyish walk in for carting in the baby paraphernalia!

In reply to Ed Bright:

castle inn quarry - sport
bus stop quarry - slate sport+trad
Craig y Llyn (Alice, Voie Normale, etc) - boulder
penmaen head - sport, down a flight of steep stairs though
idwal cottage crag - boulder. idwal squeeze is a must-do. climbing shoes not needed.

hope you have a nice trip.

Thanks both!

Tanygrisiau has some easily accessible stuff off the dam road - easy to do with a buggy or sling albeit a bit of a walk! I’m thinking things like cashmere/ break on through/ flick of the wrist etc.

In reply to Ed Bright:

Ignore this if you are in a group but when I used to take the baby bouldering on my own I would also consider the landings.  I felt I couldn't commit to high problems or dodgy landing when out on my own with the baby as I didn't want to spanner myself while directly responsible.  I was particularly mindful of banging my head.  Instead i went for low traverses (like Rheinstor) where I could get pumped instead and could easily step off the problem.

Depends on how hard the baby can climb...?

Harder than us before long, no doubt!

Thanks, that's a good thought - I'll be with my wife though so one of us will just have to deal with the crying baby / spouse with a head injury in that scenario...

Last Butt One Level at Penmaenbach?
Easyish walk from Sychnant Pass and a large flat grass area at the base.

I was at pop block today (and the other block up the road), I will definitely be back with my kids (3 yr old and 6 months old). Huge flat grassy area around both blocks grades in the 6s and 7s, minimal walk in.

I'm interested if anyone has any different recommendations for kids who like to climb but only on short boulders. I have a 3 and a 7 yo. Crags that just have lots of easy grades often aren't suitable as the boulders can just be too big or the problems way too reachy. I've found it's best where there is a big range of child size boulders they can make things up on, but these are rarely shown or mentioned in guidebooks.

I was actually planning trying RAC boulders this weekend so especially interested in there.

Thanks!

I would say at 2months old pretty much all bouldering venues are baby friendly.. and almost good to make the most of those crags that would not then be appropriate once baby is crawling/toddling We took baby in a front carrier/sling, you can also get something like a Phil and Teds cocoon which is super portable and can be stuffed in the pads so they have somewhere soft to nap/lie when you're at the crag (if they are the type of baby that can be put down which ours wasn't). Congrats on the family addition

RAC is good... a big group of us assisted toddlers there last year on unlisted stuff.

In reply to Si dH:

We made a load of stuff up in the woods around Robin Hoods Stride and Cratcliffe. I expect there are probably better venues out there but we made it work ok.

I would say as far away from others as possible. Last thing I want to hear at the crag is a howling baby. Unless it's me, 2 grades harder than I normally climb.

I'm hoping this is meant as a joke. It's hard enough getting out with kids as it is, without having to worry about people being judgemental. I for one am always happy to see people out with their kids/ babies, it's great that they are able to do this for themselves and their children. It's not the end of world if a baby has a paddy for a bit, it's usually because they're tired or hungry and then they settle down once it's sorted. Tolerance is a basic value. If you've got a problem with someone being there with a baby maybe you should move on as it's presumably much easier for you to up sticks as an adult with no kids around..?
