Hi everyone, just wanted to double check what is considered standard practice the bolts used for sandstone.

looking at the ones on n Frogsmouth quarry it looks as though thin glue ins have been used.

I have access to the Fixe 316L 160mm bolts and was wondering if you think these would be ok.

Thanks

I don't know anything about Frogmouth but XL stainless steel resin bolts are what are recommended for soft sandstone.

Best place to double check would be with https://www.thebmc.co.uk/en/northwest

Setting aside whether or not wherever you intend to bolt is appropriate (I couldn’t say), if you do intend using those particular bolts it is important to note they require to be recessed into a slot in the rock to create a rotational lock I.e. don’t just glue them in a round hole.

Firstly, good effort to you.

As others have mentioned, it would be worth checking in with the local BMC Area group.

Lots of info about spec’ing and installing bolts in the relatively recent BMC guidance: https://services.thebmc.co.uk/media/files/Gear/Bolts%20A%20Guide%20for%20In...

Two BMC Technical reports (2011 and 2017) were not overly complimentary about Fixe resin bolts (at that time) - possibly poor “engagement” between resin and bolt.

Most manufacturers specify use of epoxy (sometimes epoxy acrylate) resin glue but check with manufacturer’s spec.

Most people report good things about: http://www.bolt-products.com/ProtectionBolts.htm (also lots of test data in different rock types on the same site)

Good luck with it.
