After doing a first aid course in Feb, I've started carrying a SAM splint (have a google - they are amazing things!) and you can make a very effective ankle brace (alongside other things) really simply out of them. For how cheap, light, compact, and easy to use they are I'm surprised I'd never come across them before!

It's also worth adding a small instant icepack to your first aid kit.

second this - super easy to put one down the back-pad of your rucksack so it never gets lost.  Very light and a multitude of uses in prehospital care.

Last FA course I did (FA for Adventurous Activities) taught it has changed to "comfortable support", not compression, as too many people are strapping too tight.

Prevention - don't carry vastly more than you need, route plan your descent options if you know your ankles aren't the best, control  your pace descending - a steady sure footed descent wins the day, use proper footwear which offers some support, train to strengthen them or even strap them for a walk if recovering from previous injuries as a previously twisted ankle is vulnerable for many weeks or even months after.
