Anyone wear (or any knowledge of wearing) a thin sock with mountaineering boots? Making for a better fit whilst still keeping feet warm.

With my ski boots I wear a thin sock and it works really well, 'crushing' a thick sock to get the boot performance/feel is actually counterproductive and your feet end up worse off.

I've always worn thin socks in the Alps and in Scottish Winter climbing.

I tend to just wear regular Nike Dri-fit socks for summer alpine stuff, with a pair of la sportiva trango towers. They're what I would call thin, and I find them as good as expensive hiking/mountain socks but a lot cheaper.

Thanks both,

I know it's personal, but good to know that it's not unknown.  I've just bought new boots and a thin sock will give a much better fit. Of course you only know once you try it.

I've got feet like a duck and they get hot on long days out, and sore.

Hence thin socks. I use different ones with each pair of boots. (and always carry a spare)

Not mountaineering boots, but i only wear liner socks (year round) in my leather walking boots, anything more and my feet overhead.

Yes, I only wear one thin pair of socks nowadays.

I was forced into it as boots seem to have a narrower toe box than in days of old.  I already take a 48 / 12 so am at the top end of most ranges so cannot normally get a bigger size off the shelf.

Boots have evolved other the years, to include some insulation in mountaineering boots so I assume that two pairs of thick socks is probably now a bit obsolete so whilst I was forced into the decision, I don't think it is a problem.

Yes, I’ve only ever used thin socks. Thick socks are hot sweaty and uncomfortable.

thick socks is one of those myths that’s lingered around from the past that often gets repeated

particularly unneeded with modern boots as they fit better and are softer.
