Hey guys! So, I've caught this really intense interest in ice climbing and want to devour as much reading as I can before the winter sets in. Any advice on your "must reads" for ice climbing? Thanks - really appreciate any thoughts. === Aimee ===

For inspiring you to climb in British winter:

Cold Climbs
Wilson, Alcock, Barry
Baton Wicks

For all-round sensible, extremely useful and accessibly written technical advice:

Ice & Mixed Climbing: Modern Technique
Will Gadd
The Mountaineers

For more of the same, but with more romantic lyricism and grounded in a solidly Scottish context:

Scotland's Winter Mountains
Martin Moran
David & Charles

For more inspiration, wit and brilliant historical context:

One Man's Mountains
Tom Patey
Baton Wicks

For fabulous inspiration, and old-fashioned but still valid advice:

Climbing Ice
Yvon Chouinard
Random House

Finally, love him or loathe him, you can't really go and winter climb in Britain without immersing yourself, at least for a time, in the compendium of Bill Murray's books:

Mountaineering in Scotland/Undiscovered Scotland
WH Murray
Baton Wicks

Will Gadd's book is exellent, another good one is:

How to Ice Climb! by Craig Luebben,

a bit dated from the equipment side of things but still lots of good info in it.

Yours,

For pure fun and not instruction

If you can find a copy of a 'Century of Scottish Mountaineering' ( Scottish Mountaineering Trust) read 'Thirty hours on Ben Nevis' by Charles Inglis Clark.

Not ice climbing as we know it but gives the atmosphere of Scottish climbing brilliantly, less has changed since 1908 than one might think. People had epics in the same way for the same reasons, and in the same places, its about a very long and wandering ascent of Tower Ridge.

For information I'd look at Ian Parnell's book the title of which I forget!

A great book which also contains very good advice about Alpinism in general, as well as some excellent anecotes. Who can forget the 'Fun-hogs'?

Very generous of you sir! But give it to a deserving youngster who wants to soak up a bit of history?!
Cheers.
