Hi,
A return to Rjukan is out as conditions are v poor and everything is melting, so looking at Scotland.
Can anyone tell me is it possible to get a train from prestwick to Aviemore and do I need to hire a car to get to corrie an snachta or is there public transport around? Also any accomodation reccomendations (cheap and cheerful) would be good.
Thanks.

In reply to BOOGA: You can get the train from prestwick to glasgow cantral then walk to queen street station and get it to perth then from perth up to aviemore. dont think there is a bus from aviemore to the ski centre however you could take a bike. but im sure you would be able to get a lift along the road from someone.

There is a bus service from Aviemore to the carpark. First one leaves Aviemore about 0800 however the last bus back is at 1630 and its a LONG walk if you miss it. I was over last weekend and made do with public transport.

You'd probably be able to hitch back, I'd certainly stop if I had room. But obviously chances of a lift are somewhat diminished if you end up out till very late.

You may need to hire a car for this too.

In reply to BOOGA: IT'd be alot easier to fly to Inverness.

You could try the Ben instead - Train from Glasgow to FW, do your shopping in Morrisons just over the way from the station and get a cab to the Youth Hostel or Achintee bunkhouse. Then you're within walking distance.

In reply to BOOGA:

the bus service to the ski car park goes from the town centre (there's a timetable online somewhere), and if you miss it there are always climbers willing to give you a lift, especially if you're there on a weekend.

the climbing wall at the north of aviemore has rooms - its the cheapest accomm in aviemore i think, but a bit of a trek (25 mins?) from the town centre and the bus stop. the YH is better positioned, but more expensive, especially if you're not a member.

Thanks all!
Hope conditions are good when I get there.
