16th April sees the opening of another new wall in new in West Yorkshire with the ROKT wall in Brighouse. This latest addition is based in an old flour mill and has boulder fields, a 4.5m high comp boulder wall, a 20m overhanging lead wall with more to follow. It plugs a nice gap between the dedicated walls in Leeds, Manchester area and Sheffield.
The wall is the product of designer Leigh Topping and Euan Noble who have tried to apply a ground-up design to the building, fitting everything to the climbing facilities rather than the other way round.
Both the directors are climbers so, it may be a clichee, but this is a climbing wall built by climbers, for climbers. Although, this is probably true of most new walls these days.
ROKT will also have a gear shop and cafe, but it also has an alcohol license, so after you climb, you can party with beer in hand on the deck as the sun sets over the weir which flows just behind the old mill; or just relax in the chill out room and watch some climbing films.
