New Wall for Brighouse - ROKT

The plans for the Rokt wall © rokt

16th April sees the opening of another new wall in new in West Yorkshire with the ROKT wall in Brighouse. This latest addition is based in an old flour mill and has boulder fields, a 4.5m high comp boulder wall, a 20m overhanging lead wall with more to follow. It plugs a nice gap between the dedicated walls in Leeds, Manchester area and Sheffield.

The wall is the product of designer Leigh Topping and Euan Noble who have tried to apply a ground-up design to the building, fitting everything to the climbing facilities rather than the other way round.

Both the directors are climbers so, it may be a clichee, but this is a climbing wall built by climbers, for climbers. Although, this is probably true of most new walls these days.

ROKT will also have a gear shop and cafe, but it also has an alcohol license, so after you climb, you can party with beer in hand on the deck as the sun sets over the weir which flows just behind the old mill; or just relax in the chill out room and watch some climbing films.

The opening party for the Rokt wall

Grand Opening Party

The opening party is on April 16th and will have plenty of activities like slacklining, fun bouldering and climbing comps with give aways. There will also be a sponsored abseil for Help for Heros and Leo Houlding will be there too giving bouldering and climbing demos and lessons. In the evening the real party will get going with music and food.

Hmmm, I'm intrigued as to how that weird grid of leading/top-roping walls is supposed to work! Pete.

Hey Pete. they are silos and made of solid concrete, they are about 3.5x4 meters square i think and big enough once 3 walls are clad to allow 3 teams to climb, their will be 15 in total when they are all finished, so plenty of space. They are going to be top rope and lead and also tooling climbs, we have been playing around with some alp kit dry tooling things that simulate axes and are great fun. http://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16500&category_id=252 I hope you make it down to try the place out. Cheers Ian

They held their first climbing competition last night. It was a varsity competition between Hudds uni and Bradford uni. Everyone seemed reasonably impressed with the place.

Planning on heading down in the next couple of weeks - looking forward to it. Very intrigued by how the silos will work in practice.
