Rockfax Description
1) 4c, 10m. Climb the thin and polished left-hand crack then move awkwardly right to a blocky groove leading to a stance.
2) 4c, 10m. Traverse the rounded breaks out left to easy ground. A high tree makes a useful belay for timid seconds. © Rockfax

βeta: Does the traverse back right from the original left hand start go as a hand traverse or a foot traverse? The foot traverse seemed harder than 4c, not that I committed to it - the hand traverse seemed about right at 4c.

βeta: Gorgeous route. I also thought 5a a bit steep for the first crack, sinkers in the crack and thoughtfully created wee holes on the face. No large pro left and then rain made the traverse the trickiest bit for me and i have an official jamming disability.

βeta: I think the original route was the left-hand variation? I did the direct version and it was quite slippy and hard, but well protected, I think in retrospect the left-hand route would of given a more consistent route. The traverse at the top is very nice. If you do it in a single pitch then watch for your rope getting caught in the diagonal crack heading up left, gives you tremendous rope drag.

βeta: To anyone trying this route... Don't do the direct start - start up the HVS variation on the left (twin cracks). Once at the ledge, make a beautiful traverse right to the top of the original starting crack and continue upwards from there. Still VS 5a, but one of the best routes I know of, up to E3...

Benedict Schofield 12 Aug Lead O/S Excellent route but found the moves much harder than I should have on the first pitch, in part due to me attempting the traverse much too high to begin with; this was not helped by the fact that a nice gentleman turned up and informed me that he had climbed the route in the mid 1960s! He then asked if he could film us using his drone, which I think ended up being rather off-putting because I made several gaffs by placing gear in less than efficient ways. However, the real mare on this route came from my discovery of a squirrel that had made a nest in the crack 1m to the left of the birch tree, precisely where I wanted a belay! This squirrel was not happy with my presence and was making all sorts of chittery sounds at me, and clacking its teeth together at me, it was also being very bold for a squirrel, it came out of the crack and started doing several bluff charges at me but ultimately backing off with 1m to spare each time. I was locked in at this point because I had begun to build the belay. The squirrel then did the most unexpected thing which is actually follow through on a charge, running full speed at me and jumping right over my head to land in the birch tree. The squirrel then darted off to the right and I assumed that it would be the end of it. It was not. The squirrel then returned to the crack again, it was at this point that I noticed high pitched squeaking coming from the crack, suddenly all of this squirrel's behaviour made sense! In hindsight it was obvious, this was a mother squirrel protecting her babies. The squirrel appeared out of the crack again with something in its mouth; a baby squirrel! It darted off to the top of the crag, presumably to some safe haven. I felt awful! I had just put this squirrel through an extremely stressful situation and now it felt the need to seek asylum away from home, taking its vulnerable young with it! The squirrel returned a minute later to pick up a second baby, then again for a third, fourth, and fifth! This constant fear of a squirrel latching its rodent teeth into my face had turned the belay construction into a very time consuming affair, but eventually the mother squirrel had taken all its young away and I was able to belay up my partner. The next pitch was pretty good.

Got stuck on the twin cracks as I got myself in a bad position. Then tried laybacking it which definitely isn't the right way to do it. Got tired / pissed off and came down.
