140m, 6 pitches.

Rockfax Description
One of the classic, must-do routes of the UK, but not a route to be underestimated. Although never desperate, the route finding is testing. Scramble up rightwards to below and left of a triangular overhang which is below a grassy terrace.

1) 4a, 25m. Follow the well-travelled slab up to a ledge at 10m. Walk 5m left and climb a short corner for 3m and move right across a slab, round a rib and up to a stance on a pulpit.

2) 4b, 25m. Follow the tricky rightward-leaning gangway to a chimney groove, climb this for a few metres, often damp, then walk left on a ledge to and belay below a blunt arete overlooking the large gully.

3) 4a, 15m. Climb the arete then head diagonally right to a large triangular ledge in a corner.

4) 4b, 25m. The big pitch, which is a little loose in places. Drop down a little way, then climb up the pinnacle on the left. From the top of the pinnacle, step left onto the steep wall. Pull up into a niche and head round the corner on the left to gain a steep arete. Follow this until it is possible to step left across the chimney and belay below cracks leading to the upper slab.

5) 4a, 25m. The out-there slab. Climb a cracked groove then step across left, passing a broken chimney, to gain the base of a big slab that overlooks the large gully. Climb the centre of the slab then trend left to the exposed left edge. Finish up this in a magnificent position to a belay in a recess.

6) 30m. Climb direct to a ledge, either finish here and escape rightwards, or tackle one of the cracks above to the top. © Rockfax

βeta: The Rockfax guide says follow the well-travelled slab to start P1 but so many people go wrong this is fairly misleading. It seems many people start too far left and low, at the top of the scree. This is not the start and becomes quite bold! Continue up and right further towards the triangular overhang before starting off.

βeta: The guidebook description for pitch 1 is misleading; the route begins 20m up from where you’re tempted to begin gearing-up. On pitch 1 keep right through the broken corner, coming left when the line of jugs and overhang forces you back left across the slab. The rest of the line is easy to follow, and excellent juggy climbing throughout.

βeta: I’d love to be able to give clear indications re start but can’t. But I think it is almost underneath the triangular overhang, although it looks vegetated. I started 7-8 mt to the left and ended up in serious trouble

Misha 29 Aug 2nd rpt Practising climbing in big boots with three people on a rope. Felt a lot trickier than the time I did it in rock shoes! The pitch after the pulpit stance proved to be the crux on the day as it was wet and was tricky in big boots. Lou led all. Bloody cold for August! Just about goes on a long 50m rope with the middle person tied in at the half way point - not much rope left on the pitch after the pulpit and the last traversing pitch. Did the straight up pitches with about 3m between me and Phil.

Misha 28 Jun Lead O/S Mock guiding day. Great route on a boiling hot day - was warm even in the shade and grateful for a bit of breeze now and then when in the sun. Short roped to the base of the steeper rock then did a pitch to a block belay (the guide book description starts from there, which I didn’t realise; also split the guide book P1 into two as that made sense; hence was confused by the description for a few pitches!). Best to do the second half of the guide book P1, P2 and P4 in series if have two seconds (and hence P3 as well). One rope ok with lots of extenders (was going to only take one but automatically gave Sally the other one to carry, so ended up using both as we had them). 7h round trip from Ynys including 4.5h on the route - too slow especially with only one second but spent a long time figuring out where to go / belay so should be faster next time. Best to belay just below the pulpit stance, ideally without using slings on the pulpit for the belay so the seconds don’t have to take them off and then do an unprotected step across onto the ramp.

subdir 22 Jun Lead O/S Got the start and consequently all P1 horribly wrong - too much on the left - climbed on choss with symbolical pro - v dangerous. Only realised how crazy when saw my second’s eyes coming up. Nonsense - but of course including a clear picture of the start in the guidebook would spoil all the fun.... better to write route finding is challenging and good luck to the fuckers. Rest of climb “top 50”, oh yeah

Ghost 22 Oct, 2018 Lead O/S Found it tricky to find the start line. Went off route part way up due to soaking wet corner pitch. Turned into a bit of an adventure! Perhaps into E1 ground off to the left of the route. Got dark and had to finish with 1 head torch between the 2 of us. Can't really say we did the actual route so will need to come back. Great crag though. Type 2 Fun!

Jamiewalkerjones 26 May, 2018 AltLd O/S Final route of the day which gave us a total of 15 pitches! Fun to begin with and slowly built to a crecendo. Very very windy on the last two pitches, coming round the arete delicately with the wind whipping ropes and gear all over the place, was harrowing. Couldn't hear each other, gusts of 40pmh! That final slab is amazing, even if I did have to press my cheeks against the rock during the gusts.

On p4, looks like some people go further left, but it's better to go up the arete straight after turning the corner - great position! 2 possible belays on the slabs, doesn't really matter which one, but LH belay maybe reduces rope drag on p5.

Dave Mahon 29 May, 2017 AltLd Rained the day before and wet in places but didn't affect the climbing. We had the usual route finding niggles but the climbing was straightforward. In descending we followed a path which went down an easy gully. When it got bit slippy we decided to abseil. Well, After two whole rope lengths of nervous abbing we managed to escape to the right to cross the river. A bit slow and not recommended! In the end an excellent mountain day out.

howhard 24 Apr, 2010 AltLd O/S I led pitches 1, 3 and (most of) 5. The Rockfax guidebook description for pitch 5 is not good - it sends you up a grassy gully to the right of the main slab, with awkward moves and a traverse of the main slab right at the top. So we missed one of the highlights of this route. It looks like a lot of people make the same mistake as there is gear left in the route. Look carefully at the picture.

asmith37 31 May, 2009 Lead O/S What an awesome route! We made an early start and were first on the route at 7.30 and enjoyed the sun views and situation, by the time we were at the top of pitch 3 there were queues at the bottom. Did in 4 pitches, combined pitches 2 & 3, guidebook suggests a peg belay at top of pitch 2 which seems non existant along with and descent gear, so carried on to the nice large ledge on pitch 3. also combined pitches 5 & 6, if your ropes are long enough i can't see any reason for belaying at the top of the slab. Finished in just over 4 hours and continued onto reades route. Found this technically easier then i expected it to be, but the immense exposure and seriousnous more than makes up for it. I love that exposure!

The start of pitch 1 felt a little intimidating due to the snappy nature of the rock and the lack of decent gear. The slab on pitch 5 is awesome. Just try not to look down over the left side too much!
