Rockfax Description
A stunning route with many challenging pitches. Start below a steep groove, directly below the imposing 'Great Arete'.
1) 5b, 25m. Ascend the groove to a ledge, make committing moves up the main groove to a hard section at about 2/3 height over a bulge. Gain the grassy terrace and belay below the next groove.
2) 5b, 20m. Head up the groove, enter the slick chimney section and exit to a slopy ledge. At the bulge, move onto the bubbled wall on the right and belay on a slopy ledge. Wire up high and peg on the right. © Rockfax

Misha 22 Jul, 2018 AltLd O/S Hardly the classic it’s supposed to be - pretty rubbish really! Another Hard Rock ‘special’. Not a patch on its (almost) namesake on Cyrn Las. Would make a very good and very hard winter line. Heard that it had dried out in the Great Heatwave of 2018 (which we’ll be talking about for years). The heatwave had subsided and there had been some rain but we figured it would be dry enough - which it was but certainly not fully dry. Sam led P1, which after a vegetated start turned out to be a decent E1 5b - until the steep grass and slimy rock finish which thankfully had some gear. The grass was wet just to add to the fun. Probably the psychological crux of the day, good lead by Sam! I linked P2 and P3 - had a bit of drag but not too bad with plenty of extenders. P2 featured a nasty precarious section low down, there was gear but then had to go for it by bridging while worrying whether the shoes were clean and dry. Higher up there were some tricky moves but at least I wasn’t going to deck. Worth E2 5b I reckon as a fall on the crux wouldn’t be good and it’s all somehow spooky. I quite like mountain routes but didn’t enjoy this at all. P3 was the best one, short texhnical section on the traverse. There’s enough gear but worth E1 5b. Sam did the next two pitches. The main part of the groove was ok to start if a bit damp, then got pretty dirty and a bit vegetated - HVS 5a, then easier but fairly bold slab above. I got the top pitch with no line, little gear and much greenery. It’s just not a quality route - would have been a bit better if it had been bone dry but even then it’s vegetated and dirty in places and the climbing isn’t really enjoyable. May be I’ll come back in another 7 years’ time to do Great Corner... Great Arête looks good but you have to do the first two pitches of The Groove to get to it... Double up on silver to red cams and take a yellow.

Pete_Frost 23 Jun, 2018 AltLd G/U I'm glad I did this, and may well come back to lead P2 which I thought was very traditional 5b with lots of bridging on holds that don't slope the way you want them to. Megan did a great job leading this pitch which is not one I would like to do in the damp. Keep your shoes clean - I skidded off when following the main pitch as I stood around racking gear, and when I reached the belay I found that my shoe soles were green with algae. Led the odd numbered pitches and had a great day out.

Flavio 10 Jun, 2018 AltLd O/S Bit of a gamble starting after "The Great Corner", at 5pm, on a Sunday, and many other reasons... high risk high reward! Gunned up it in 2.5h in 4 pitches, led all but the last. Incredible climbing and positions! (Ehem, if you get spanked simply because you do it in non ideal/wet conditions it doesn't make it a crap route does it?!)

Decided to ab off and come back during a drought.

Graeme Hammond 8 Sep, 2012 AltLd O/S Top afternoon (given the late start!). Led P2, P4 & 6. Hard damp first pitch seemed solid 5b and understandably took quite a while to complete but good gear. P2 was excellent hard bridging though a bit damp in the crack itself in a couple of places but easy to avoid and solid gear. P3 has enough gear and some good moves. P4 is excellent and the jugs just keep coming :) P5 is easy & good though quite bold. P6 is easy but very bold, bit loose and vegetated in places but nothing you wouldn't expect on the upper part of a mountain crag. Thought overall pitches were 5b, 5b, 5a, 5a, 4b, 4b
