Rockfax Description
One of the best and most popular routes of its grade in the UK. Start beneath the well-worn corner with the letters 'GA' scratched on the rock on its right-hand side.

1) 4a, 30m. Climb the tricky polished corner then make a move rightwards onto a slab. Climb this and continue up a crack, or the wall to the left, to the top of the rib.
2) 12m. Walk/scramble easily up left to the base of a long groove with a roof at half-height.
3) 50m. Climb cracks on the right-hand side of the groove past the roof, then step left into the smaller continuation groove which leads to a ledge. Belay on the next ledge a little higher.
4) 30m. Scramble up right to a path and walk along this to the base of a rib and the letters 'GA' on the rock again.
5) 4a, 50m. Start on the right of the rib and climb up and leftwards to gain the groove above. Follow this until a step left gains a steeper continuation-groove. Climb this with increasing difficulty until a move leftwards gains The Haven - a good ledge, block belay well back.
6) 20m. The infamous Knight's Move pitch. How's your chess? Climb the crack behind the belay to reach the chessboard slab above. Exit this slab by the top right corner, step round the arete to find a comfortable stance.
7) 20m. Romp up the corner above the belay to reach a good stance. An escape rightwards from here is easy if the weather is bad or darkness is closing in.
8) 25m. Head a little way right and climb the steep rock to a rib. Follow this to an ever-easing finish. © Rockfax

Me and Jack weren't sure what the knights move was but we enjoyed the slab climbing on the pitch all the same! 9hour day altogether including a lovely sociable lunch on the top of Tryfan with other parties!

We had bit of a long day out today. Left home at 7:30, drove to Ogwen, arrived at the bottom of the climb around 11:30 and joined the back of a rather large queue.... The climb was a slightly surreal experience, I've never seen anybody haul a backpack behind them after leading on an HVD until now. On pitch five one leader went to "rescue" another and after helping had a smoke on a ledge while the "rescued" leader finished the pitch. We retrieved two wires and returned them to the group in front. I picked up a dropped wire from the same set which was in really poor condition with several broken wire strands. I took it home and binned it. After being on the route for 5 hours one of the less experienced seconds from the group in front started to become a bit upset with the exposure. We topped out in a cloud of midges at around six thirty. I think I led pitches 1 , 3, 5 and 7. On the bright side there were two pleasant groups behind us who we spent the afternoon chatting to under sunny skies in the beautiful Ogwen valley. In a final twist we arrived back at the car to find it had a puncture. I didn't fancy changing the tyre on the busy A5 so pumped it up. Thankfully the puncture was slow so we were able to limp to the nearby campsite. We changed to the spare the next day and drove to Bangor where Qwik Fit repaired it for £25.

Loved p5 and knights move, though the latter just requires a steady head. Found the 'romp' less rompish and more awkward, lots of loose rock on the final pitch, thought provoking when you can see a group of 5 gearing up at the base of the route!!

We had some substantial route finding difficulties earlier on and foolishly ended up at the start of Belle Vue Bastion, which looked a bit too challenging... the rope got stuck after we abseiled back down to the path where P5 starts, many many thanks to the two people who advised on how to successfully get it back down again! Amazing climb! Have been planning to climb it with Jo for about 2 years. Started a little later than expected so despite the sun it was shaded, windy and cold from about P4 onwards. Jo lead P1, P5, P7, I lead P3, P6 & P8. Loved the top pitch despite the wind cold, and the Knight's Move (P6) although the subsequent belay was miserable. Descended down the North Ridge as the the most obvious path, wish we'd had time to scramble up to the proper summit. Took some time to find the bottom of the route so about 1.5hr in, 7.5 climbing and 2hrs out.

Started at about 8:45am or so. I lead the first 7 pitches - with both seconds climbing simultaneously on guide mode (really easy way to belay!), before it was too dark to do the 8th. The first few pitches were sopping wet, which made a few moves a lot more difficult than otherwise. Most memorable pitches were 5 and 6 - but Ania was feeling the exposure by then and needed some rope assistance. Scrambled off to the summit of Tryfan in the dark (I belayed my seconds once more as one section of scrambling was outside their comfort level) - before navving over to the path through Cwm Bochlwyd. When we arrived at Ogwen cottage we were greeted by the MRT! (the party above had called them as they thought we would have trouble with the dark ;) ). With hindsight would've chosen an easier route.

Several loose looking and hollow sounding flakes on p5 detracted from the enjoyment a bit, the route also felt a little disjointed and artificial. Chess board was probably the highlight although the belay was cramped for 3 of us.

First pitch very traditional- all body parts required. Took me a while to get to grips with where to place gear as lots of flarey, wet cracks. David took us up a very polished corner on second pitch which I was glad I wasn't leading- definitely harder than HVD. 3 and 4 uneventful. 5 good fun moving between slabby grooves. Accidentally ran 6 and 7 together having gone too high up slab on the Knight's move- led to massive rope drag up over a steep slimy ledge... Pitch 8 very pleasant finish.

Sheltered from the Westerly wind on the East face, the first 4 pitches were great fun despite intermittent showers. Heavy rain transformed the steeper, upper section of the 5th "groove" pitch into a nerve racking canyoneering experience with zero friction on the polished footholds. But it went OK and the Knights Move pitch was good clean fun with the wind drying the slab quickly. Thereafter, pitches 7 & 8 were a joy followed by sarnies and a romp down the N ridge in warm sunshine. Great Top 50 route, well worth the stars. Probably Severe in the wet - add at least 1 numeral to 4c on P5 during heavy rain and take a snorkel! P1 M, P2 N, P3 M, P4 N, P5 N, P6 M, P7 N, P8 M.

Started at the GA and then ended up god knows where. Think we did something at about a S or HS on the Terrace Wall. It was very exposed for a VD lead thats for sure. Great day out though and not a breath of wind.

BarrySW19 04/Oct/14 AltLd O/S

A real day out! We did this one on a fairly wet day and the polished damp rock certainly made it feel a lot harder than HVD. The Knight's move was actually pretty easy with the exception of the step onto the slab from the crack with only a very slippery foothold to rely on. The previous pitch seemed far harder and was certainly my scariest lead to date. The Haven belay is well named. Got to the top in good time then got lost on the descent and ended up abseiling back down onto Heather Terrace just as it got dark, then had to walk off from there by torchlight.

I led the crux pitches (natürlich). The line is a bit broken and if it wasnt for the GA scratched into the rock it wouldnt be an obvious climb. Some scrappy pitches but in contrast some very good pitches. Got stung by a wasp on pitch 7 / 8 belay.

Ran p5 and p6 together (they are 1 pitch in Rockfax) and nearly ran out of rope because we were climbing on 50m ropes, and Alaric had to remove some belay anchors for me to reach the block belay. Lovely route and great view when higher up. Really good value for money. Didn't get back to car till 11:20 though due to very late start and getting a little lost in the dark on descend. Great route and managed to do it in the dry! The most difficult move was a rock-over on the left foot at the top of the fifth pitch. North Wales Classics says the route is graded VD and I now see in the newer North Wales Climbs it's graded HVD with two 4a pitches. I don't think either of the pitches are 4a and I'd grade it as a hard VD. The North Wales Classics books also says it's a half hours walk in? No it isn't, with all your gear I'd give it an hour.

The 'Knights move' slab and pitches before and after were really good but daunting! Although it was a solo it took around 6 hours due to heavy traffic: Lots of resting on ledges and taking in the views! Done in combination with Overlapping Ridge Route, Central Buttress descent and North Ridge descent. Massive, awesome day on the mountain in perfect weather.

In two pairs- me and Joe swung leads, Rob led Garvey. Epic day out, felt more like a few nice single pitches with walks/scrambles between, until the last three pitches, where position and more perched belays make things more interesting. Pitch before the knights slab felt like the crux, or would haveif I hadn't gone off route on the slab moving round the taste and then missed the belay ledge before down climbing back to it. Topped out and scrambled the ridge to the summit at ~7. Jumped the gap, had a beer and descended to the west as the sun set :D grand day out!

Led pitches 2,3,7. Mat led the others. Guide books seem a little confused as to what this is (VDiff vs HVD) but I'd tend to go for the latter if for nothing but the length and the exposure. Definitely an epic day out and totally justifies the three stars. Didn't find the Knight's Move that hard - we both thought the pitch after was trickier. Naturally that's the one I was leading! Would also say that three of the "pitches" barely qualify as such as they are either light scrambles or walks.

Excellent and no queues! On P2 Graham ignored the rib on the left and climbed the icy couloir on the right where he had to deploy his nut key to cut steps. He also led the Knight's Move pitch in a similarly impressive style. On completing the route we continued to the Adam and Eve but decided against climbing them for the fear of being blown off the mountain. The descent (via N Ridge) would have felt safer if we had axes on us, but not too bad without, all be it a bit slow.

Good fun route. Polished. Ran a couple of pitches together as one was a walk up a grass slope. Glad we did though...Ian ended up with the tougher / polished pitches...Oops. TAKE CARE regarding the belay at the end of the knights slab...I belayed in the notch in the head wall but the correct one was about 6m right JUST AROUND the headwall corner. The description on this page above is excellent but I hadn't read it !!! Also got ropes knotted at this point(so plenty of hanging belay practise required on some easy ground)...As ever , Mr Goudge cruised it. GET ON IT...GREAT DAY OUT (don't take a novice though ...too serious for that)

Beautiful day, we where the only people in sight. This was my first big mountain route and it did not disappoint. Although it was very polished in places, in the dry this is not a problem. Technically it is only a HVD although the exposure can make it feel at least a grade harder, VDIFF leaders may struggle.. The pitch before the knights slab is the crux with the step left being a bit of a leap of faith. The birds nest belay after the knights slab is, er, interesting to say the least. I will repeat this route!

Not a cat in hell's chance of my ever leading this, but seconding was fantastic. Dropped a sling at the start of pitch 7 and was so cross about the sling that I forgot to be scared of the Knight's Slab. Wonderful guys following us rescued the sling, too. Sunshine, bitterly cold, flurries of snow.

What an epic! Only started walk-in around 1, so much too late. Climbed P1 as 2 groups of three, scrambled past the next 3 pitches on icy grass, then led P5 and followed up P6 and 7, by when it was completely dark. Rob struggled below and Peter abbed down to help him, and later 2 other guys who had got in trouble somewhere to the right below and one of which had hurt his shoulder. At that time Liam - soloing - dislocated his shoulder and almost came off. Luckily Peter could clip him on the rope just in time. Then skipped P8 and went down the NW face as a group of 8 in 3 hours. Just back in time for the pub!

No idea if which pitches I did but phil led most of the route. we pitched it short and quick to stop us getting cold. topped out as darkness fell and had one hell of a descent down the south buttress in 70mph winds before circling back round to the east face to get out of the punishing wind. 4hrs up 2.5 hrs down. wot an adventure :)

Attempted the GA for the first time on Friday 28th October. The weather was good, we started to climb just after 9am with just two climbers ahead of us. Led the first 5 pitches, struggled abit on pitch 5, but managed it eventually. Whilst on pitch 5, the other climbers were negotiating pitch 6 (Knights move), when I saw the lead climber take a fall, quite a distance!! When we caught up with them we established that he was ok, but clearly shaken. They made an abseil retreat. This unnerved us, given that we'd never witnessed a fall before (only started climbing in March 2011). After discussing we decided to carry on and attempt the Knights move. At this point I managed to get 3 good pieces of protection in whilst moving left on the slab above the spike belay, but it was very wet and covered in moss. I made 3 attempts but could not progress because of the wet surface and moss, on retreating I slipped and took a fall (first experienced), protection held and Abi had a good firm stance, so ok, a part from sore backside and grazed skin. Consequently made an abseil retreat. Can anyone help me regarding which way you approach the knights move once you move above the belay spike, left or right?

Tough rope drag on 2 pitches but didn't help ourselves by having only a couple of spare short slings... Descent in the dark - don't recommend that! Great climb in all though.

Had a real off-day so partner led the whole route. Found it really hard going but maybe that was because I was in an indescribably foul mood all day - sorry Ian! Long route, very VERY polished. First pitch crack is horrendous. Crux pitch (Knights Move) isn't that bad actually. Some very tricky sections, certainly felt very hard for a VD (as it was in the Ogwen book). Confusing, very hot walk in and walk-off from the true summit in the dark (as is our style) made this a long, long day. Great sense of achievement, though!

Good climbing - slow party in front, choice of either ab or epic climbing in the dark. Ab it was, will be back..!

with John, Paul
Tomber 18/Nov/10 -

Gear retrieval mission after previous epic. Pissing wet and horrid conditions, Stu took a huge fall off the knights slab - retreated.

Stuart Hurworth 18/Nov/10 Lead dnf

Mission to retrieve gear off route - decided best idea was to climb up above and ab down as gear was off to the right, moved together for first two pitches then climbed - tried to do a quick scramble route but ended up doing a short silly VD traditional style chimney getting stuck with bag, after that should have climbed green gully but instead went up somewhere between the two routes! Got up to knights move slab and took a 10m sliding fall off the awkward crux move - ended up sat on the belay block! My own fault for rushing - was pulling on gear to make the move (which popped!!) and had a sling on the belay block - which promptly lifted off. Abbed off whole route down green gully after. Disappointing! Was very wet and tried to climb in 'hiking trainers'. Mistake. Will be back.

Singleton_Alex 13/Nov/10 Lead rpt

Good fun in big boots and hail.

Tomber 12/Nov/10 AltLd dnf

Had an epic. Managed to unknowingly wander onto what I now think was the VS Super Direct route where things got very bold, very muddy and very slippy very quickly. Made one bold, committing and unreversable move (felt like 4C, maybe 5a with the mud) up to what I thought was going to be a belay ledge, but it turned out to be foot wide clump of grass with a single crappy nut placement 10 - 15 metres above and out of sight of my last placement. Slab above me looked easy tbh but was streaming water, covered in black moss and looked nigh on unprotected. As I knew I was off route, I didn't fancy continuing to boldly climb wet stuff into what, for all I knew could have been unclimbable territory, and risk getting faced with 1 dodgy nut keeping me from a 30 or 40 metre lead fall straight into a gully. Game over, I got on the phone to OVMRO, who were, of course outstanding. :(

Stuart Hurworth 12/Nov/10 AltLd dnf

All going well until 4th pitch above path - my leader went the wrong way heading up diagonally to the right of the route, the Superdirect. He got stuck there on a small ledge with wet rock above and some very poor protection below him on a full ropes length. He called MRT - after bit of a wait we got winched up - allegedly by Prince William according to the Ogwen MRT guys. An experience but not one I am proud of!

Got slightly lost on pitch 3/4. But climbed the route in a torrential downpour and decided pitch 8 far to wet. Lead Knights Move which is a fantastic pitch, not hard but nicely exposed especially in the rain with very low cloud.

Lead first to fourth, sixth and eight pitches. V led the fifth and seventh. Fifth pitch given as 30 m and is more like 50 m! Still, not a problem - loads of places to get in gear and set up a belay. In fact, pitches five ad six are the best two and give the most fun. The Knight's Move slab is great fun.

Superb weather, led route with Andy & Phil following on separate ropes to speed things up - plan blown by party of 5 ahead of us, causing us to wait for up to 75 minutes on 2 different ledges !! Great route, though and hard for the grade with wildly exposed moves on top pitches (especially the undercut Knight's Slab and the undercut groove to its right). Started climbing at 1130 and Topped out on Tryfan's summit at 2000 !!!!! Nice topping out to a glorious sunset though. Back to van by 2130.

I failed to see how it gets three stars. Just as you almost begin to feel as if you are climbing, you reach a grassy ledge, you set off again, and just as you begin to feel like you're climbing... I'd waited all year to do this climb, I finally got my chance, I've only been doing this craging for 6 months now and all I talked about was doing the grooved arete. Classic it maybe but it didnt do much for me has a whole climb. pitch 5 was really good fun, knights move was ok. I guess i expected to much ! maybe a move onto one Lliwedd's big two is next

Led Pitch 2 and 6. 7.5 hours on one route!

with Rn C
CathS 25/Jul/09 AltLd rpt

Led pitches 2,4 (walk!), 6 and 8. Good to lead the Knights Slab this time, but the route took ages due to two very slow parties in front. Overall length of pitch between the grass terrace and the Haven is approx. 45m, not 35m as stated in Ground Up or the 210 ft given in the old Ogwen guide. Can be done as one pitch though.

Every bit as good as I thought, truly memorable day. Every pitch throws something at you, pitch 5 before the haven being the crux in my opinion rather than knights move. Very sustained climbing throughout and quite committing for the grade - I can see many a confident VDiff leader getting a bit of a shock on this route! In my opinion this is as hard or harder than one or two severes I can think of.

Led pitches 2,5,6 & 8 with bex leading the rest. Was very polished, but didn't spoil the fun. I thought pitch 5 was the crux being long, steep and sustained with a tricky move to exit the top of the groove. The knights slab was straight forward, maybe trying to belay without sliding off is the crux?! Finished in 5 hours.

Great day out - climbed as a 3 and in approach shoes all the way. Started in the rain and ended in the sunshine(!). Approx 6 hrs 30 mins to top-out. I lead P1, 5 and the last two as one long pitch. Thought P5 (the grooves upto the haven) was the crux...

James lead first 4, I did next 3. This was my first true multi-pitch. Thoroughly enjoyed it, also quite nervous at times. I thought the crux was the step from the right to the left groove on 5th pitch. Didn't have much trouble on Knight's, though in hindsight should have dropped in a bit more protection for my seconders. The belay stance at the end of it is tricky for three people. We had a beautiful glow of a setting sun on Adam and Eve. Unfortunately camera battery had died.

I led 1-4, Bob led the top half. Brilliant fun, especially from pitch 5 onwards (the crux is on pitch 5 I feel). Apologies to the guy who had to wait at the top of the Knights slab for us to move off the belay stance where there is just enough room for two.

This must be one of the best routes of its grade in Wales. Unfortunately when I did it, it was wet from about the third pitch up. No route finding is required here, just follow the polish. Very worth while, but get there early if you want to avoid slow parties.

Very polished first pitch. Get in there early as it is a popular route and can take many hours to complete if stuck in a queue. Personal - Lead on pitches 2,3,6 & 7. Knight's slab easy once committed but would never have spotted the belay position if I wasn't waiting for it to become free.
